Jim McCoy Named to Atlantic 10 Legends Class of 2017

UMass' all-time leading scorer joins elite group representing the best of A-10 basketball.

AMHERST, Mass. – The Atlantic 10 Conference revealed its Atlantic 10 Legends Class of 2017 on Thursday morning with Jim McCoy and Kathy Coyner representing the University of Massachusetts. McCoy is the all-time leading scorer for the UMass men's basketball program, while Coyner was a playmaking guard for the Minutewomen during one of the most successful eras in the women's basketball program's history.
 
Established in 2013, the Legends program recognizes men's and women's basketball student-athletes and coaches who have made a lasting impact on their respective basketball programs and institutions. This year marks the fifth class the Atlantic 10 has inducted. Each year, A-10 member institutions select their two Legends. Previous honorees have included Basketball Hall of Fame members, national champions, Olympians, and professional players.
 
"The Atlantic 10 is pleased to honor the achievements and success of these 28 outstanding individuals," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "Their meaningful impact on their institutions, teams and on college basketball as a whole have made a lasting impression, and they are each very deserving of this prestigious accolade."
 
The Women's Basketball Legends will be saluted with a breakfast on Friday, March 3 prior to the 2017 A-10 Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinals.  The event will take place at the Richmond Marriott beginning at 8:00 a.m.

The Men's Basketball Legends will be honored on Saturday, March 11 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa., prior to the 2017 Men's Basketball Championship semifinals.  The celebration awards brunch will be in the Lexus Club, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
 
McCoy helped produced four of the most successful individual seasons from 1988-89 through 1991-92. He ended his time in Amherst with 2,374 points, nearly 200 more than the next player in the team record book. McCoy, who led UMass in scoring during each of his four years, won four Atlantic 10 All-Conference awards, including first team as a sophomore, junior and senior, when he was also? a NABC All-District selection. McCoy was a catalyst in then-head coach John Calipari turning the Minutemen into a national contender, as the squad improved from an eighth-place finish in the A-10 his freshman season to first? as a senior when UMass reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and won 30 games.
 
 In addition to ranking tops in program history for points, McCoy is also the all-time leader in field goals made (876) and field goals attempted (2,013) while he is still second in free throws made (575), free throws attempted (810), games started (121) and minutes played (4180), and third in scoring average (18.8). Following his tenure in Western Massachusetts, McCoy went on to play internationally in Sweden and Spain.
 
Coyner was a key figure during one of the most successful eras of UMass women's basketball. In her time with ?the Minutewomen, she helped UMass reach the NCAA Tournament in 1998 and the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinals twice.
 
The 5-foot-6 guard, was known for her prowess as a playmaker and defender. She ranks third all-time in assists (515), eighth in steals (169), and 15th in points scored (1,132) for her career. The mainstay played 3,729 minutes which ranks third all-time? in school history and holds the school record for consecutive free throws made (31).
 
Along with her success on the court in helping UMass average 15 wins a season, Coyner excelled in the classroom as a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and Atlantic 10 All-Academic honoree in 2001.
