FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - University of Massachusetts rowing won the Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events and finished tied atop the team points standings with Rhode Island at 51 points apiece, but Rhody's win in the First Varsity 8+ gave the Rams the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.
If two or more teams finish atop the points standings upon completion of racing the order of finish in the Varsity 8+ event is used as the tie-break to award overall placement.
The Atlantic 10 inverted the race schedule due to weather concerns, which sent the Varsity 8+ boats onto the water first. Rhode Island crossed in 7:37.3 for the gold medal while UMass earned second only two seconds later. Duquesne took bronze in 7:50.3.
The Minutewomen followed with back-to-back victories over Rhode Island to create the tie atop the scoreboard. In the Second Varsity 8+, the Maroon and White reached the finish line in 8:07.1, exactly 2.5 seconds before the Rams.
In need of another victory, the Varsity 4+ outpaced the field by nearly 15 seconds for the gold medal. Rhode Island took silver with its time of 8:41.2 while Saint Joseph's picked up third place in 8:42.9.
The Minutewomen took home first place in each of its three opening races of the day to secure spots in the grand finals. The Varsity 8+ took the top spot in 7:07.9, the Second Varsity 8+ raced to a 7:11.3 finish while the Varsity 4+ crossed in 7:58.5.
