Lineup Depth Key as Tennis Defeats Bryant 6-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Despite having two key players out on Saturday, the UMass tennis team was able to cruise past Bryant 6-1 at the Bay Road Tennis Center. The win, coupled with Friday's 4-1 win at Quinnipiac, pushed head coach Judy Dixon over the 300-win plateau for her UMass career. With Saturday's victory, she has 302 wins with the Minutewomen and 342 overall in her 27 years as a head coach.
Saturday's match saw UMass (12-6) without the services of Anna Woosley and Ana Yrazusta. That forced the Minutewomen to alter both the doubles and singles line-up from what has been the norm for the bulk of the season.
At No. 1 doubles, Ruth Crawford took Yrazusta's spot with Carol Benito with the two winning 6-3. Laura Moreno and Ruth Crawford played No. 2 doubles winning 6-2 to secure the opening point of the match.
Playing No. 3 singles, Arielle Griffin won in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) giving UMass a 2-0 lead. Crawford then won at No. 1 singles in two sets with her first going to a 7-6 tie break.
The Minutewomen clinched the match on a win by Benito at No. 4 singles. She won her opening set 6-4 before battling out a 7-5 win in the second set.
Laura Moreno won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6 singles to round out the scoring.
Brittany Collens fell at No. 5 singles in a three-set match with her and Bryant's Ashanti Campfield trading 6-3 sets to start. The third set went Campfield's way 7-6 in a six-point tie break.
UMass is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 12, at Sacred Heart, however, inclement weather in the forecast could alter the schedule. The Minutewomen are also slated to host Rhode Island next Thursday, April 14 for Senior Day at the Mullins Center Courts.
