UMass-St. Bonaventure Scouting Report
UMass men's basketball will be in search of revenge for a loss to St. Bonaventure earlier this season when the Minutemen head to the Bonnies' Reilly Center for a Sat., Feb. 27 contest at 4 p.m. St. Bonaventure visited UMass on Jan. 9, 2016 and took an 88-77 decision from the Maroon and White at the Mullins Center.
Donte Clark scored 25 points against the Bonnies while Antwan Space added 14, Tyler Bergantino posted a career best 13 and Jabarie Hinds chipped in 10 more, but it was not enough to overcome five Bonnies in double-figures as the visitors shot 59.6 percent from the floor (28-of-47) and 88.0 percent at the line (22-of-25).
After a rough three games stretch that included losses to Dayton, Richmond and VCU, St. Bonaventure rebounded with seven wins in its last eight Atlantic 10 games to move back toward the top of the league standings. The Bonnies currently sit at 11-4 on the year and are only one game out of a three-way tie for first place between Dayton, VCU and Saint Joseph's.
The high-scoring trio of Jaylen Adams, Marcus Posley and Dion Wright continue to lead St. Bonaventure to victory. Adams posted 18.7 points per game, followed by 18.2 from Posley and 16.0 scored by Wright, who also leads the team in rebounding (8.9 per game). Though the Bonnies rank just 10th in the league for field goal percentage (.437; 668-of-1530), St. Bonaventure shores up victories with its free throw conversions rate (.774; 443-of-572), the best in the conference. The team is also second overall in 3-point accuracy (.366; 210-of-573) as well as 3-point defense (.315; 177-for-562).

February Performances Spring Minutemen To Wins
After UMass went 1-7 in January, the Minutemen rebounded over the opening seven games of their February slate with four wins in seven contests, including victories over Rohde Island in overtime, [RV/RV] VCU, Duquesne on the road in overtime and George Mason at the Mullins Center.
During the last seven games, which also includes losses to Fordham, Richmond and Saint Joseph's, UMass is shooting 40.2 percent overall and converts 71.4 percent of its free throws. C.J. Anderson has emerged as a disruptive point guard with 11 steals in that span to go with 4.4 rebounds per game and a +2.28 assist-to-turnover ratio (16 assists, seven turnovers).
The guard trio of Donte Clark, Trey Davis and Jabarie Hinds proved paramount to the team's success with balance atop the scoring column. Clark provided 17.3 points per game while Hinds added 17.0 and Davis scored 15.4 more. Hinds was the most effective shooter over the last seven games as he hit 52.4 percent of his attempts (44-84), including 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers (12-for-27). Hinds was also 19-for-22 at the foul line (86.4 percent) and sported a +1.71 assist-to-turnover ratio (24, 14).
Hinds A Major Key
During the 12 UMass victories, Jabarie Hinds shot 51.9 percent overall (82-of-159) and 48.1 percent from 3-point land (26-of-54). He also hit 81.1 percent of his free throws (30-of-37) and dished out 54 assists against 23 turnovers (+2.35 A-T ratio) with a team-high 27 steals (2.3 per game). He is second among Minutemen in point scored during those games (18.3) and has at least 17 points in nine of those 12 contests.
Minutemen Steal One In The Steel City
UMass men's basketball erased multiple double-digit deficits and forced overtime with a late surge, which resulted in a 108-99 comeback win at Duquesne on Sun., Feb 14. Jabarie Hinds scored 37 points, Trey Davis added 26 and Donte Clark and Antwan Space posted 17 each while Space had a double-double on 17 boards.
The Minutemen made use of 10 steals to help create the win, the sixth game this season Massachusetts had at least as many and tied for the fourth-most in a single contest behind three games with 11.
UMass entered the second half down 43-33 to the Dukes, but Hinds and Davis combined for 39 of the team's 51 second half points to force overtime. The Minutemen went on to post 24 points in the extra frame, giving them 75 scored during the final 25 minutes of the game.
Hinds Pours 37 On Duquesne
Redshirt senior point guard Jabarie Hinds came off the bench for 37 points in the 108-99 overtime win at Duquesne on Sun., Feb. 14. Hinds shot 13-for-20 overall, including 7-for-8 from beyond the arc, and finished 4-of-5 at the foul line. He made six consecutive 3-point field goals, including all five of his second half attempts and his lone try in overtime.
Hinds' 37 points rank tied for the sixth-most recorded in a single season and give the Minutemen their fifth game of 30 or more points on the season (Trey Davis - 3; Donte Clark - 1).
His previous one-game scoring best was 24 points, earned at Harvard on Nov. 17 and matched against Central Arkansas two days later. He scored 24 points in the second half at Duquesne alone, when he shot 9-for-11 from the field and 1-for-2 at the foul line.
Clutch Performances Net Hinds Some Hardware
Jabarie Hinds scored 27.5 points, dished out 6.5 assists and provided 3.5 steals per game during upset wins over VCU at home, 69-63 and at Duquesne in overtime, 108-99. Hinds shot 20-for-30 overall (66.7 percent), including 8-of-9 from beyond the arc (88.9 percent) with seven made free throws in eight attempts (87.5 percent) during the two games.
Breaking Down The Upset Of VCU
UMass men's basketball handed VCU its second loss of the A-10 season and dropped the Rams to 17-7 overall and 9-2 in league play with a 69-63 Minuteman victory on Thurs., Feb. 11. In the win...
• The Minutemen hit eight consecutive 3-pointers to start the game, including two apiece by Donte Clark, Zach Coleman and Trey Davis and one each from Jabarie Hinds and Antwan Space.
• UMass led by as many as 15 points early in the second half and held the advantage for 33 minutes, 41 seconds of the possible 40 minutes played (84.2 percent of the game). VCU never led by more than two points and only did so for 1:50 of the game (4.6 percent of the game).
• VCU fought back and tied the game at 52-all with 6:19 to go, but Clark hit a corner 3-pointer on a feed from Hinds during the next UMass possession and the Minutemen held the lead the remainder of the way.
• The guard trio of Clark, Davis and Hinds combined for 58 of the 69 UMass points, which equates to 84.1 percent. Clark, Davis and Hinds average 66.2 percent of the scoring load on the season (1134 of 1713 points).
• The Maroon and White limited VCU to 5-for-20 on 3-point attempts. The 25.0 percent conversion rate marked the lowest for the Rams during A-10 play and their second-lowest all season (22.2 percent; 6-of-27 in 77-64 loss at Georgia Tech).
Defense Does Work Versus Rhode Island
The UMass defense held the Rhode Island Rams to just 56 points in a 61-56 Minuteman victory in overtime on Tues., Feb. 2. It marked the fewest points allowed by the Maroon and White throughout an overtime contest since Dec. 15, 1953 when UMass fell to Middlebury, 52-50.
It doubled as the first time in 2015-16 UMass limited its foe to fewer than 60 points. The Rams shot just 30.0 percent overall (21-for-60) and 15.8 percent from outside (3-of-19) in the loss. It is the lowest field goal percentage and second-worst 3-point conversion rate (14.3 percent; 2-of-14; Central Arkansas, Nov. 19) for a UMass opponent this season.
Davis Puts In The Free Ones
Trey Davis has hit 117 of his 137 free throws as a senior in 2015-16 for a conversion rate of 85.4 percent, currently the third-best for one year in program history. Davis is ahead of Anton Brown and Lorenzo Sutton (83.3 percent) but trails Mike Pagliara (88.2 percent) and Rafer Giles (86.9 percent). His numbers rank best among Minutemen with at least 100 attempted. The only additional player on the list with at least 100 attempted is Monty Mack (94-of-115; 81.7 percent) for his 1999-2000 average.
Clark Steady As They Come
Donte Clark produced 17.0 points per game over the opening 15 league matchups in a continuation of his success during non-conference play. Clark scored double-figures in 12 of those games, including 20 vs. Saint Joseph's, 21 at No. 25 Dayton and vs. George Washington to go with 22 in the win over VCU, 23 at Richmond and 25 at home against St. Bonaventure. He is currently 12th in the A-10 for scoring during league play.
Clark averaged a nearly identical total (17.6 points scored per game) during the non-conference slate as he produced 209 during 12 out-of-league games.
Five 30+ Point Games Most In Two Decades
Three 30+ point performances by Trey Davis (40 vs. New Orleans; 30 at Davidson; 36 vs. Saint Louis) and one each from Donte Clark (30 vs. New Orleans) and Jabarie Hinds (37 at Duquesne) gives UMass men's basketball its most 30-point individual performances since the team had seven in 1995-96 (Marcus Camby 5; Donta Bright 1; Carmelo Travieso 1).
