Clark scores 19, Holloway adds 15 in Atlantic 10 men’s basketball opener
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball began the Atlantic 10 portion of the 2016-17 schedule with an 89-77 loss to St. Bonaventure at the Mullins Center on Friday afternoon. Donte Clark led the Minutemen with 19 points while Rashaan Holloway put in 15 more with six rebounds in only 19 minutes on the floor.
DeJon Jarreau also eclipsed double-figures in the scoring column with 13 points for the second consecutive game. Chris Baldwin added career highs of nine points and nine rebounds in an efficient 12 minutes played.
Jaylen Adams had 29 points for St. Bonaventure while Matt Mobley scored 23 and Denzel Gregg earned 11.
Down six with four minutes, 28 seconds to go in the opening half, Massachusetts used free throws to pull back within one less than a minute later. Jarreau had four of the five makes while Holloway split two attempts as the Minutemen knocked the deficit down to 33-32 at the 3:29 mark.
However, the Bonnies responded with a 10-3 run to end the half – spearheaded by a pair of Mobley 3-pointers – for a 43-35 St. Bonaventure advantage heading into halftime.
Massachusetts started slowly in the second half and the Bonnies capitalized with the opening six points of the frame for a 49-35 lead with 17:06 to play. St. Bonaventure's then slowly grew its margin as large as 19 before the Minutemen responded.
A six-point run led by Baldwin, Tyrn Flowers and Jarreau cut a 15-point gap to nine with 2:09 to go. Flowers hit a floater in the paint, Jarreau connected on two at the foul line and Baldwin fought to the hoop for a put-back tip-in during the streak.
The disadvantage proved too great to overcome for the Minutemen as Mobley scored the next five points and sealed the win for the visitors.
