December 15, 2016 | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford announced on Thursday the hiring of Barb Weinberg as UMass' head field hockey coach.

"I am pleased to appoint Barb Weinberg as the ninth head coach of field hockey at UMass," Bamford said. "Barb has tremendous credentials as both a player and coach which will positively impact our program moving forward. She is well-prepared to lead her own program given her experience working with some of the most respected coaches in the sport. Our staff and student-athletes look forward to Coach Weinberg's arrival and the work she will do to continue the national prominence of UMass field hockey."

Weinberg joins Massachusetts Athletics after serving as Wake Forest's associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the last three seasons. The Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice and won the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference during her tenure.

"I am extremely honored to take the lead of the UMass field hockey program," Weinberg said. "I have great respect for the rich history that coaches and players of the past have created and look forward to building upon this tradition. The desire of the student-athletes to achieve the highest level of success on the field and in the classroom is evident. It is an exciting time in UMass Athletics and I want to thank Ryan Bamford and Darrice Griffin for giving me this opportunity and believing in my vision. I cannot wait to get started."

Weinberg made assistant coaching stops at American University (2013-14), University of Maryland (2010-13) and University of Iowa (2008). During her time with the Terrapins, the team captured back-to-back NCAA titles in 2010 and 2011.

A 2005 graduate of the University of Iowa, Weinberg was a two-time All-American, three-time All-Big10 performer and two-time team captain for the Hawkeyes (2000-04). She was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team from 2005-10, making 19 international appearances in that span. Weinberg also served as the alternate goalkeeper for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The Minutewomen finished the 2016 season with an Atlantic 10 title, a 14-8 record and a trip to the NCAA First Round, paced by All-American Sarah Hawkshaw, who'll be a senior in 2017.
