Minutewomen score with 3:31 left in regulation, down No. 1 seed Saint Joseph’s, 2-1
RICHMOND, Virginia – University of Massachusetts field hockey used a late penalty corner conversion to secure the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship over No. 1 seed and No. 20 nationally ranked Saint Joseph's, 2-1 at VCU's Cary Street Field in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday afternoon.
The Minutewomen secured a berth in the NCAA Championship with the victory, their 13th win of the year. Saint Joseph's drops to 15-6 with the loss, the first to an Atlantic 10 team this season.
Izzie Delario and Nicole Miller scored once each while Sarah Hawkshaw added an assist on the first UMass goal of the game. It is the 16th all-time Atlantic 10 Championship for Massachusetts, second consecutive title and fourth in the last five years.
Miller gave the Minutewomen the decisive goal in the 67th minute. The senior forward cleaned up a loose play in front following a penalty corner chance, one of nine the Maroon and White earned against the Saint Joseph's defense.
Saint Joseph's had the opportunity to even the game at 2-2 after time expired in regulation as the Hawks earned their final penalty corner seconds before regulation expired. However, the Massachusetts defense was up to the task and sealed the outcome as it forced the ball outside the circle without a shot attempt.
Anna Willocks necessitated Miller's late-game heroics as Willocks put in her conference-leading 25th goal of the season off of a one of Saint Joseph's four penalty corner opportunities. Pepa Serrano and Emily Nonnemacher earned assists on the 62nd minute conversion.
Delario put Massachusetts in front following a pass from Friday's semifinal hero, Hawkshaw, who found Delario near the goal for Delario's 10th goal of the season.
The Minutewomen led in shots, 21-5, including an 11-3 lead in on-target attempts. Emily Hazard preserved the win with two saves while Victoria Kammerinke made nine for the Hawks.
