Field Hockey Pushes No. 2 Maryland to the Brink in Penalty Shootout Loss

November 12, 2016 | Field Hockey

Minutewomen end 2016 season with 14-8 record, team’s 26th NCAA berth

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Massachusetts field hockey suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss at No. 2 Maryland in the NCAA Tournament First Round at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday afternoon. Sarah Hawkshaw scored for the Minutewomen while Emily Hazard produced seven saves

Hawkshaw struck for her 16th goal of the season in the ninth minute on a breakaway play down the middle of the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex field. Hawkshaw created space as she cut through two defenders near the midline, kept possession from another Terrapin at her right side and chipped a reverse-stick shot into the back of the cage.

The defense limited Maryland to only three on-target shots during regulation, but the final one evened the game at 1-1 with only 65 seconds to go.

Linnea Gonzalez fired in a penalty corner shot that UMass goalie Emily Hazard stopped in front; however, play stayed tangled near the goalmouth and the officials ruled a penalty stroke. Balsdon stepped to the dot and sent a low shot off the left side of the backboard for the equalizer.

UMass erected a defensive wall in front of the cage during the overtime periods to force the game into a penalty shootout. During the two 15-minute frames, Massachusetts silenced five Terrapin penalty corners as Hazard produced six of her seven saves on the day.

With the game undecided after 100 minutes, both teams sent their penalty shootout selections to the midline for alternating eight-second possessions. The Terrapins claimed the game as Maryland scored on its opening three penalty shots while Terrapin goalkeeper Sarah Holliday kept the Minutewomen from converting.

The Terrapins led in shots, 24-9 and penalty corners, 12-5. Sarah Bates made three saves for Maryland. In addition to Hazard's seven stops, Melanie Kreusch added a defensive save for the Minutewomen.

Massachusetts finishes the year 14-8 overall. The team won its 16th Atlantic 10 Championship and appeared in its 26th all-time NCAA Tournament during 2016.
