January 21, 2016 | General
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Athletics’ Academic Services have been deemed National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) certified by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
"Successful completion of the N4A Academic Program Certification demonstrates athletics commitment to promoting and maintaining a culture committed to student-athlete academic success,” said Joan Hopkins, Massachusetts Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services.
“Our student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to study at a nationally-ranked research institution while competing at the highest level and our goal is academic and competitive excellence. We are proud to have student-athletes realizing this goal every day.”
Program Review and Certification is an extensive analysis of an institution's academic support unit which is conducted by a team of experienced and trained N4A consultants. Consultants involved in a Program Review and Certification will not only evaluate and confirm that minimum standards are being met by an academic support unit, but will look beyond those components to provide an institution with more in-depth recommendations as it relates to the values, approaches and resources available and utilized by their academic support unit.
In addition to the certification announcement from the N4A, Massachusetts Athletics is proud to announce that its student-athletes from all sports posted a combined grade point average of 3.001 for the semester. The cumulative GPA at the end of the fall semester for all sports was a 3.069. The women’s teams achieved their highest cumulative GPA for any fall semester with a 3.286.
With a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the fall semester, 180 student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List while 26 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Massachusetts Athletics boasts 48 student-athletes who are members of the Commonwealth Honors College. 362 student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher to earn Maroon Scholars List honors.
