Trio Collects Awards From New England Football Writers

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts football seniors Blake Frohnapfel and Tajae Sharpe earned year-end awards from the New England Football Writers’ Association (NEFWA) while Sharpe and senior Jovan Santos-Knox were named to the All-New England Team.

Frohnapfel has been given the 2015 Nason Award for Senior Achievement. Playing in 10 games before suffering a season-ending injury in 2014, he returned for 2015 to collect 6,264 career passing yards and 40 career touchdowns. He’s one of four UMass quarterbacks to throw for more than 5,000 yards and one of the three to throw for more than 6,000 yards.

Sharpe has been given the 2015 Harry Agganis Award for New England’s Outstanding Football Player and is an All-New England Team selection. A two-time first-team All-MAC honoree, he led the nation in receptions per game (9.3) and total receptions (111). He set Massachusetts records for single-game receptions (15), single-season receptions (111), career receptions (277) and career receiving yards (3,486).

Santos-Knox, also a 2015 second-team All-MAC selection, is an All-New England Team selection. In 2015, he totaled 131 tackles in 12 games to rank No. 3 in the MAC and No. 5 among FBS players. He averaged 10.9 tackles per game to rank No. 3 in the MAC and No. 7 among FBS players. His 87 assisted tackles lead the FBS and MAC and are the No. 7 single-season output in UMass history.

Frohnapfel and Sharpe will be honored Thursday at the annual NEFWA Awards Banquet.
