Minutewomen Open Season at URI Pentathlon

KINGSTON, R.I. - UMass women's track and field kicked off its 2015 indoor track season on Friday at the 21st annual URI Pentathlon as five Minutewomen attended the multi-event meet. Sophomore Bridget Deveau took bronze overall with 3,382 points. The Nova Scotia native's first-place finish in the 800-meter run at 2:21.50 and her second-place finish in shot put helped lift her into third in the field of 12 competitors.
Close behind Deveau in fourth place was freshman Gabrielle Bennett in her collegiate debut. Bennett finished with 3,307 points, nabbing first in high jump at 1.64 meters and also winning the 60-meter hurdles (8.94 seconds).
Sophomore Julia Witt earned ninth with 3,001 points. Witt was second in high jump at 1.61 meters. Freshmen Grace Kelly and Charlotte Robison saw their first competition in a UMass uniform on Friday as Kelly was 11th with 2,540 points and Robison was 10th at 2,812 points.
The Minutewomen will be back in action Jan. 9 at the Yale Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. in New Haven, Conn.
