Tennis Splits 4-4 With Minnesota At Dartmouth Invite

HANOVER, N.H. - Four Minutewomen picked up wins in singles play, but it was a tough day in doubles action as the UMass tennis team split 4-4 with Minnesota on Saturday afternoon in day two of Dartmouth's Big Green Invite. In addition to facing the Gophers, UMass also played its three sets of doubles matches against Dartmouth afterwards with the Big Green winning all three.
The Minutewomen and the Big Green will finish the three-day invitational on Sunday with singles play.
Minnesota started Saturday winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before finishing the sweep with a five-point tie-breaker win at No. 2 doubles over Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosely (8-7).
In singles play, Crawford picked up a three-set victory at No. 2 singles winning the third set with another five point tie-breaker, 7-6 (5). The freshman won the opening set 6-3 before dropping the second 3-6.
Carol Benito rallied after dropping the first set of her No. 5 singles match. She won the next two sets by scores of 6-3 in each. Arielle Griffin won in straight sets at No. 7 singles, while Brittany Collens won at No. 8 singles.
Both Ana Yrazusta and Aarzoo Malik retired in their second sets due to injury at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Those injuries forced the shuffling of the doubles line-up against Dartmouth in the afternoon session with Anna Woosley and Crawford moving up to No. 1 doubles. Griffin and Laura Moreno paired up for No. 2 doubles, while Collens and Benito played No. 3 doubles.
The Big Green won all three of the doubles matches with singles play set to start on Sunday at Noon at the Boss Tennis Center.
