Marquis Young Awarded Weekly Gold Helmet

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts freshman running back Marquis Young has been awarded the weekly Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation Gold Helmet Award, it was announced at a luncheon at Harvard on Wednesday.
Young, a native of Fairport, N.Y., rushed for 168 yards on 32 carries in Massachusetts’ 28-17 win at Eastern Michigan on Saturday. He set career game-highs in both categories and also rushed for his third career touchdown to give UMass a 7-3 lead early in the first quarter. He averaged 5.2 yards per carry with a long of 30.
The Minutemen totaled 439 yards of offense, including 330 markers on the ground in the win, UMass’ first game reaching 300+ yards rushing since Oct. 9, 1999 vs. Northeastern. With senior Jamal Wilson’s 112 yards rushing, the win also marks the first game UMass featured two 100+ yards rushers in the same contest since Sept. 22, 2007 at Maine.
On the season, Young totals 363 yards on 78 carries with an average of 6.2 yards per game. He has two 100+ yards performances, his first at Notre Dame (103 yards) earlier this season.
The Minutemen will host Miami (Ohio) on Sat., Nov. 21 at McGuirk Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3 where Alex Faust and Matt Chatham will have the call.
