UMass Post Game Quotes

UMass Coach Mark Whipple

"We're having a hard time handling the success again."

"We're still a work in progress. All week was better and there was better preparation and coaches did a good job and we just have to make probably one more play and find a way to get an edge."

On what Jean Sifrin did well today:
"He made a big play in the end zone. He's a great target."
"He's a really good kid and a really good teammate and I think he's going to help our entire offense"

On if you felt like this is more steps in the right direction going forward:
"Yeah in some ways, I just, when you're 31-20, we tried to make a play on first down...made some incomplete passes, so those things don't happen in practice it's a mentality. It's not that the guys aren't tough minded but they have to learn to over come that."

"They have to learn to play the next play...that's just the mentality we are trying to preach."

"I thought our whole team handled it better and our guys around us are playing better."

UMass Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel

Does it feel good that there was a significant amount of progress?
"I mean we can't be acceptable... There were a couple plays here and there that we should have made and that's something that kind of got away from us there. We have to learn to win a little bit. On offense we really improved a lot, but there is still plays out there... that's where it would have made a difference."

What was it like to have Sifrin as a target today?
"I mean he is just a freak athlete really. Out in the field he causes a lot of problems for defense and you could see it there, I mean he had two touchdowns. Having a guy like him on the field is definitely helps the quarterback."

Did you recognize in practice this week that there was going to be a difference?
"I knew the first day he got there and was watching him run around, the way he played that he could really help us. Having him on the field today was really beneficial to our offense."

UMass Tight End Jean Sifrin

What's it like to play a game for UMass?
"It's exciting being on the field."

Is the one handed catch something you practice? You had an idea you could go out and get it?
"No, it's from basketball, just coming down with the ball. I always tell him to just throw it up if your in the end zone and I'll be able to go up and get it, but I didn't think it would be that high. Other than that, we don't practice it, but I saw it go up I post up defender and I went up for it."

On sitting on the side lines:
"It's been tough sitting on the side lines watching my teammates play without me, but its a working process."

UMass Randall Jette

For you guys as a team, how much did this feel like progress and how frustrating was it to feel like you might have had that one?
"At the end of the day, our ultimate goal is just to win. We pulled through this week again, so its week two that we didn't come out with a win. We got to watch the film, and we will see stuff we did better last week, but our ultimate goal to get a win and we didn't do that this week."

Do you feel like you guys are becoming a better football team?
"Yeah... We really have to watch the film and critique ourselves and be honest with ourselves."

What do you do in the next couple days in practice to figure out how to win as a team?
"Watch more film. I think believing we can win. We have to overcome adversity. We make a good play, then give up a big play and we can't be down on ourselves. We need a little more maturity and if we get over that we can win. Every game we go into thinking we can win and we work hard."

Colorado Head Coach Mike MacIntyre

On his team:
"Our focus today was to finish. We just wanted to go out there and play a whole game to the end and finish strong. I told my players that they needed to each go out and just do their job. We have the heart, the fight, and the attitude."

On UMass #87 Jean Sifrin:
"He's a big dude. After about the third time, we realized that anytime he's in the game they are going to throw him the ball."

On the penalties:
"Our problem mainly concerns the new rules. The new rules on defensive backs and roughing the passers. We have some younger guys and they will learn. We aren't worried about having more penalties because everybody has more penalties right now."

On UMass' performance:
"We were not surprised by how hard they played and how much intensity they came out with. Last week they played their butts off with BC. We knew that their quarterback would be more relaxed this time because this was his second game."

Colorado Quarterback Sefo Liufau

"We just showed a lot of heart this weekend, and that's good to see because we're gonna be in some battles this year... and the guys, compared to last weekend... did a lot better fighting back"

On long pass to Spruce:
"Protection broke down... I rolled to the right, Spruce was already going down the middle and I tried to give him a chance... kind of reminiscent of high school, I threw a lot of those in high school, kind of natural, but props to Spruce for running and finishing the play."

How easy would it have been for you guys to panic when you were down 31-20 to a team like that?:
"It's definitely easy to panic and give up. I'm really proud of the team for showing some heart and fighting... it's something that I feel like we've lacked over the past couple of years, and this week we just fought.... Coach told us to finish every game, every play, and that's what we did this week." On UMass: "Great program, great team, great players... on the rise... they were in it `til the end."

Colorado Wide Receiver Nelson Spruce

On effort and guts shown by team:
"Something that coach has been talking about all week: finishing... and it's something we talked about at half time. We were down by ten at that point... something just kind of turned and we were able to finish and get the win."

On play with Sefo:
"That was a nice play.... He must of gotten pressured and he wasn't able to get it out there... So he kept the play on and I was able to get behind the safety... I don't even know how he saw me... I ran under it and turned it up." "It's something I've been working on all off season, my downfield ability... It feels good to be able to execute and capitalize in that situation."

On UMass:
"They're a good team. Obviously I don't think we played our best but they fought for four quarters... I don't know if we were prepared for that... they were better than I thought."
