Field Hockey Stopped By Temple In 2-0 Loss
August 31, 2014 | Field Hockey
LANCASTER, Pa. - Despite a nine-save effort from goalie Sam Carlino, the University of Massachusetts field hockey program dropped a 2-0 decision to Temple in the 2014 Conference Cup finale at the Nook in Lancaster, Pa., on Sunday. Carlino finished the two-game weekend with 21 total stops in the cage.
"Overall I do not think it was a great weekend in either game in terms of performance," head coach Carla Tagliente said on the losses to No. 1 Maryland and Temple. "I do think the later part of the second half today was better. We have plateaued a bit and are struggling in certain areas. Right now it is about getting better in each day."
The Owls (2-0 overall) recorded their first goal of the afternoon in the 11th minute as Paige Gross fed a penalty corner pass to Nicole Kroener, who finished low for the score. The one-goal lead held until the Owls doubled their margin at the 46:04 mark. Amber Youtz, a 2013 NFHCA All-America selection, dribbled into the circle and cut across the front of the cage. As she raced toward the left post, Youtz used a reverse-stick shot directed toward the center of the cage to add to Temple's lead.
The Minutewomen were unable to cut into the deficit during the remainder of play as Massachusetts was outshot, 24-7 during the contest. UMass also lost the penalty corner battle as the Owls notched a 9-4 advantage.
A trio of Minutewomen combined to take all seven of the team's shots. Brooke Sabia led the pack with three while Nicole Miller and Renee Suter earned two apiece. Each placed one attempt on-target.
The University of Massachusetts field hockey squad (0-2) returns to Amherst for its next contest as the Minutewomen host Maine on Garber field at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 to open the 10-game home portion of the schedule.
