Temperature tonight at kickoff was 15 degrees Fahrenheit with wide chills of -1 degree. This was the coldest since playing at Montana in the 2006 NCAA Semifinals (21 degrees at kickoff).
Captains - Tajae Sharpe, Stanley Andre
QB Austin Whipple made his first career start. The first play of the game was a completed pass, the first of his career, to Tajae Sharpe.
LB Stanley Andre made his 35th career start (all consecutive), while DB Randall Jette made his 34th career start.
WR Tajae Sharpe made his 30th career start including his 21st consecutive.
UMass trailed Akron 10-0 after the first quarter. That was the first time since the Bowling Green game (Sept. 27) that UMass has not had a lead after the first quarter - a span of five games. It was also the first time that UMass was shutout in the first quarter since the Penn State loss (Sept. 20).
Rodney Mills had a career-long 72 yard reception in the 3rd quarter
Austin Whipple threw his first career touchdown with a 1-yard completion to Jean Sifrin in the third quarter.
Jean Sifrin finished with two receptions for 23 yards. His touchdown reception in the third quarter was his team-leading sixth of the season.
Jovan Santos-Knox had 19 tackles which are a career high giving him 129 tackles for the season and 193 for his career.
UMass had 235 offensive yards for the game which were the second fewest of the season. The Minutemen also had 51 offensive plays which ranked second fewest of the year.
