Today was the 59th meeting in the series between UMass and Maine. With the UMass loss, the record now stands at 41-16-1.
The Massachusetts coaching staff surprised the players this afternoon with maroon helmets upon their return from pregame warm-ups. This is the first time in program history in which the Minutemen's helmets are maroon.
In the first half of play, the UMass defense rose to the occasion on third-down, shutting down Maine on five attempts.
Linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox recorded his first career interception early in the first quarter, which halted Maine's 76 yard opening drive.
Sophomore Trey Dudley-Giles had a career-best 41 yard return to open the game. Dudley-Giles now has seven kick returns for 206 yards through two games.
Quarterback Mike Wegzyn threw his first touchdown pass of the season on the opening drive of the game to sophomore Bernard Davis; the first touchdown reception of his career.
Sophomore Tajae Sharpe caught his first career touchdown and had career-bests in receptions (11) and yards (85).
Ed Saint-Vil had a team-high 14 tackles, which also was a personal best.
UMass only committed three penalties. The third fewest amount of penalties committed under Coach Molnar.
The Blackbears outgained the Minutemen 514-265 yards on the afternoon.
