Columbia Tops Tennis, 5-2, In Afternoon Match

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The UMass women's tennis team lost to the Columbia Lions in New York, 5-2, this Saturday afternoon in what was a close and hard fought match. UMass now falls to 1-4 overall on the season while Columbia improves to 2-0.
Jessica Podlofsky and Julia Comas recorded the two wins for UMass from the third and fourth singles spots. Podlofsky defeated Ioana Alecsiu at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Comas took down Crystal Leung at the fourth singles spot in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. With the wins, Podlofsky improves her overall season record to 12-5 (2-3 dual) while Comas moves to 9-8 overall (3-2 dual).
Coming to an end was Chanel Glasper's four-game win streak as the freshman fell to Katarina Kovacevic from the fifth singles slot in a hard fought loss, 7-6 (10-2), 7-5. Glasper's season record now sits at 12-4 (3-2 dual).
All three doubles matches were closely contested. Yuliana Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz fell, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles while Hazuki Onaga and Sonia Bokhari lost by the same score at the No. 2 doubles slot. Podlofsky and Glasper teamed up for the third doubles pairing for UMass, falling to Leung and Kovacevic of Columbia, 9-7.
The team will look to get back into the win column next Friday at Temple in the first of a three-match weekend road trip (Feb 10-12 in Philadelphia).
