KINGSTON, R.I. - UMass sophomore Moa Mattsson scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season, but Dayton's three second-half goals helped the Flyers past the Minutewomen, 4-1 in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Tournament at the URI Soccer Complex on Thursday evening. UMass, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, ends the year at 9-10-1, while No. 2 Dayton will advance to the semifinals with a record of 14-4-1.
After Kelsey Smigel hit the post for the Flyers in the fourth minute, sophomore Alyssa D'Arcy had the Minutewomen's first scoring chance of the contest at 7:25 as her header from close range was grabbed by Jordin Melchert.
Dayton managed to take a 1-0 lead before the intermission, though. Smigel collected a pass from Stephanie Emery, dribbled into the middle of the 18-yard box and put a shot into the right side of the net at 34:53.
The Flyers made it a 2-0 margin early in the second half as Haley Keller sent the ball home into the right corner at 48:45.
UMass then cut the deficit to one shortly after senior goalkeeper Emily Cota turned aside a penalty kick by Juliana Libertin. On a free kick from Grace Coombs along the right-hand side, Mattsson headed in the service to bring the score to 2-1.
However, Dayton promptly responded, regaining the two-goal advantage just 29 seconds later. Ashley Campbell bent a shot in under the crossbar for the Flyers' third of the night.
Libertin added Dayton's fourth and final tally in the 64th minute off a feed from Colleen Williams.
The Flyers finished the match with a 27-9 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 7-2. Cota made six saves for Minutewomen, while senior Stephanie Gordon played the final 15:50 and stopped one. Melchert registered four saves for Dayton.
