Women's Soccer Secures 1-1 Tie With Charlotte

AMHERST, Mass. - A free kick goal from junior defender Grace Coombs in the 88th minute helped UMass women's soccer secure a 1-1 tie with Charlotte at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon. The decision moves the UMass record to 7-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Atlantic 10 competition while Charlotte stands at 10-4-1 and 4-1-1 in conference play.
Coombs' tally occurred at the 87:22 mark of play after Charlotte was called for a tackling foul. Coombs lined up a quick strike from the left side of the edge of the 18-yard box and floated the shot into the top-right corner for her second goal of the season.
The 49ers earned the opening tally of the contest only 1:38 into the match as Jennifer Lee recovered an attempted clearance by the UMass defense and fired a shot into the right side of the net.
Shots favored Charlotte, 25-10 while the 49ers earned eight on-target attempts to seven for the Minutewomen. Charlotte also led in corner kicks, 7-6 and fouls 9-7. UMass senior goalkeeper Emily Cota earned seven saves while Alex Kubrick stopped six attempts for Charlotte.
The Minutewomen continue their season with their the home game of the year - 2012 Senior Day - on Sunday, Oct. 19. The contest also marks "Women's Soccer Whiteout" presented by Supercuts Soccerfest, with the first 50 students through the gates receiving a free t-shirt.
