Swimming And Diving Split Against Army In Home Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams split against Army in their 2012-13 home opener, Friday evening. The women came out on top in dominant fashion winning, 170-122, while the men fell, 172-123. The Minutewomen finished first in eleven events and set a pool record in the process.
Sophomore Molly Smyth once again dominated the distance free events winning both the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle with times of 10:19.34 and 5:08.79, respectively.
Freshman Jocelyn Yuen swept the fly events in her first meet at Joseph Rogers Pool with times of 56.94 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:08.49 in the 200-yard butterfly.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team capped the night in fashion for the Minutewomen. The team of Amina Meho, Anna Cavanaugh, Cassie Sosnovich and Zoe Judd set a pool record with a time of 3:33.82.
The women were unstoppable on the diving board taking the top three spots in both events. Michaela Butler once again took first in both the one- and three-meter dives, with scores of 263.25 and 272.92, respectively. Mary Atkinson and Molly Elkins came in behind her rounding out the top-three in both events.
The Minutemen once again saw a strong performance sophomore Hao Luong. He took the top stop in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall at a time of 52.16, while finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.19.
Sophomore John Conway led the sprint freestyle for the men winning the 50-yard free at a time of 20.99, he also took third in the 100-yard free with a time 47.83.
On the boards for the Minutemen freshman Josh Koppel took second in the three-meter with a score of 269.98, he also took fifth in the one-meter. Senior Alex Merkulov took third in both events with scores of 258.98 in the three-meter and 265.87 in the one-meter.
Both teams will be back in action for a two-day dual meet with Binghamton University starting on Friday November 2. The meet will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and resume at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
