BURLINGTON, Vt. - Chapin Duke scored a goal in the first minute of each half to lead No. 14 Boston College (2-0) to a 5-0 victory over UMass in the season opener for the Minutewomen on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field in Burlington, Vt. Duke's two goals and Carla Tamer's two assists led the Eagles, spoiling Carla Tagliente's first game as head coach for UMass. The Minutewomen will face the host Catamounts on Monday at 2 p.m.
Duke started the scoring just 34 seconds in when she gathered a bouncing ball in the circle and gave BC the early lead.
It was still a 1-0 game going into the second half, but Duke tallied her second 50 seconds in when she gathered her own rebound and scored.
The Eagles added three more second half goals, all off penalty corners. Jacqui Moorfield scored in the 42nd minute, Courtney Tavener in the 56th, and Maura Keith finished the scoring in the 67th minute.
Senior Alesha Widdall recorded six saves in goal for the Minutewomen. Callie Sweigart led the team with two shots.
Shots were 19-5 in favor of BC, while the Eagles held the edge in penalty corners as well, 10-4.
Monday's 2 p.m. game at Vermont was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, but was moved due to Hurricane Irene.
