Offseason Awards And 2011-12 Captains Named

AMHERST, Mass. - After a 15-9 overall record and a fifth place finish for the second consecutive year, the UMass tennis team looks forward to next season as they passed out the team awards and named the 2011-12 team captains. For the team MVP, it was unanimously voted that freshman Jessica Podlofsky were to have the honors. With Most Improved, those honors went to freshman Yuliana Motyl. Finally, coach Dixon gives out an award dubbed the "Coach's Award" and that distinction went to senior Kaitlyn Carpenter. The three players that were named as the 2011-12 team captains were junior Gabriella Jannotta (non-traveling), sophomore Julia Comas, and freshman Jessica Podlofsky.
As a freshman, Podlofsky accrued an overall record of 19-9 in singles and 15-6 in doubles. With 19 wins in singles, 15 wins in doubles, and combined 34 wins overall, it makes her leading the team in singles and second with doubles and overall wins and to be recognized as team MVP.
Motyl with a rough start, she began the season 0-6 but finished strong with an 8-4 record in singles. As she partnered up with sophomore Chantal Swiszcz, they were able to tally 13 wins as the number one doubles team. With the help of her teammates nomination, finishing the season strong, and playing well in doubles, Motyl was given the honors as "Most Improved".
Carpenter, as a senior this year, made strides in many places in the UMass tennis program. This season alone, she had the team lead in doubles wins (19) and overall wins (35) and was able to climb up in the record books to 10th all-time in overall victories with 92. Coach Dixon looked at Carpenter as the deserving player for her own "Coach's Award".
The UMass tennis team will have its annual banquet today in Northampton at 645 p.m.
