Women's Track Finishes Fourth At Home Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team held their home opener on a gorgeous spring day here in Amherst, Mass at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The Minutewomen came in fourth place overall as a team with 111.5 points. Albany won the meet for the women and Williams won the meet for the men.
Nalis Mbianda is back in competition and had a first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 42-05.50. Right behind her in second place was Rachelle Bourque, who threw a mark of 39-07.25.
Bourque also had a second place finish in the javelin throw, hitting a mark of 137-07.00. Behind her was freshman Megan Maloney, who threw a mark of 119-03.00 and took fifth place. At the discus throw, Kaylee DeVincent placed fourth and threw a mark of 116-07.00.
On the track the Minutewomen's top performances came from junior Karen Roa in the 5000 meter run and Michelle Jenssen and Sarah Bitterman in the 400 meter run. Roa took second in her event, running a time of 17:38.18. Jenssen and Bitterman went second and third in the 400 meter run with times of 1:05.69 and 1:06.07 respectively.
The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Gina Perno, Erika Unger, Sarah Bitterman, and Michelle Jenssen, finished in second place with a time of 3:53.57.
In the 800 meter run, Gina Perno, Erika Unger, and Deanna Julian took fourth, fifth, and sixth. Perno ran a time of 2:12.38, just shy of her own fifth all-time mark of 2:12.15. Unger ran a time of 2:17.08 and Julian finished at 2:17.88.
Join us at the UMass Track and Field complex next week for our second home meet of the outdoor season. The Minuteman Invitational will be held on Saturday, April 16 at 11:30 a.m.
