UMass SAAC Contributes To Bowl-A-Thon

NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. - This past Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3, the UMass Student-Athlete Advisory Committee participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl-A-Thon raising money for the charitable organization. There was a great turn out for the event which was held at Spare Time Bowling Alley in Northampton. Member's of SAAC participated in the fun filled event.
The bowling alley was well decorated with children and adults alike having a great time for a good cause. The UMass SAAC filled three slots for the Bowl-A-Thon was comprised of four student-ahthletes who were competing to raise money for the organization. The first slot was on Saturday which was filled by Gabby Jannotta (Tennis), Tanisha Hodgson (Tennis), Jenn Corriveau (Swimming), Stu Amick (Soccer). The next two slots where on Sunday. The first group started at noon which was Marc Concannon (Hockey), Courtney Mayerick (Field Hockey), Shane Curran-Hays (Soccer), Deanna Julian (Track). The second group was Lindsey DiOrio(Soccer), Rachel Miranda (Soccer), Sean Carter (Basketball), Meghan Collins (Soccer).
Each group of student-athletes picked a team name for the Bowl-A-thon and worked together to raise money to support the BBBS of Hampshire County. The student-athletes raised money by getting individuals to sponsor their teams.
Since 1975 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampshire County has been providing one-to-one mentoring relationships to local children in need of positive adult influence and friendship.
Supervised by a staff of professional case coordinators, volunteers spend time weekly with a child for at least one year developing a positive, trusting, and enriching friendship.
A special person, such as a "big brother" or "big sister" can often be the one factor that can change the destiny of a child's life, providing the resources and encouragement to become a productive and healthy adult.
