AMHERST, Mass. - On Sunday, the UMass tennis team topped off the regular season with a win over the Scarlet Knights of Sacred Heart, 6-1 at the Bay Road Tennis Club. After going 12-8 on the season, UMass waits to hear on Monday what its seeding will be for the Atlantic 10 tournament. Coach Dixon predicts that her team will be seeded seventh because of Duquesne win over Army and a Saint Louis win over Xavier earlier this year, putting UMass behind both teams and potentially playing Temple in the quarterfinals.
On senior day, the doubles tandem of Candynce Boney/Tanisha Hodgson started off the match with a victory, 8-5. The victory was followed by No. 3 doubles team of Jessica Podlofsky/Kaitlyn Carpenter win, 8-1, and the No. 1 doubles of Yuliana Motyl/Chantal Swiszcz victory, 8-6 to round of the doubles matches.
Senior Kaitlyn Carpenter was able to quickly defeat her opponent Delaney Downing in the No. 6 singles position, 6-1, 6-2.
Julia Comas, Yuliana Motyl, and Jessica Podlofsky in the No. 1,2, and 4 singles positions all were victorious against the Scarlet Knights.
Sacred Hearts only victory came against senior Candynce Boney, 6-1, 6-2. During the No. 3 singles match Coach Dixon had to take an injury timeout because Boney needed to fix her shoulder brace. Boney looks to rest up this week before the Atlantic-10 tournament from April 8-10 in Charlottesville, Va.
