September 18, 2010 | Field Hockey

Sept. 18, 2010

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - American University scored two goals in the game's first 14 minutes and that proved to be enough as No. 20 UMass field hockey (3-4) fell to the No. 18 Eagles (4-2), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field. The Minutewomen tried to mount a comeback, dominating the second half with 5-1 and 7-0 advantages in shots and penalty corners, respectively, but could not find the back of the net.

Natalie Ellenberger scored the game's first goal on a penalty corner 2:56 into the game. Shelly Montgomery struck in the 14th minute, making it 2-0 and finishing the day's scoring.

Alesha Widdall made three saves for UMass, while Hannah Weltzman made two stops for the shutout in goal.

UMass' 5-1 shots advantage followed a first half that saw American have the 5-0 edge in shots. Corners were 2-0 the way of the Eagles in the first half before UMass had the 7-0 advantage after halftime.

The Minutewomen return to action on Sunday when they play at No. 2 Maryland in a 2 p.m. game.
