Women's Track Nabs Third Place At New Englands

DEDHAM, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team closed out competition at the New England Championships by taking third place overall. The Minutewomen amassed 60 points over the course of the two-day meet and saw a number of great performances from the squad's athletes. Boston College was able to win the meet with 102 points while New Hampshire took second place with 93 points.

During day two of the meet, Lisa Wilson posted solid marks in both the discus and shot put. Wilson took second in the discus with a mark of 152-01 and third in the shot put with a toss of 43-11.25. Also placing in the shot put was freshman Nalis Mbianda who took fourth place with a mark of 42-04.00.

Emma Riedel continued her day one success in the 100 meter dash by grabbing fourth place in the final heat with a time of 12.57. Fellow freshman Michelle Jenssen notched a seventh place finish with a time of 58.63 in the final heat of the 400 meter dash. Junior Gina Perno put up a strong time of 2:13.34 and placed eighth in the 800 meters.

Rounding out the day two performances was the 4X400 and 4X800 meter relays. The 4X4 placed sixth and the 4X8 placed eighth with respective times of 3:54.48 and 9:21.13.

Day one of competition saw freshman Rachelle Bourque take the championship crown in the javelin (135-04) and Lisa Wilson set a new school record in the hammer throw (185-01). Overall, it was a fantastic meet for the Minutewomen and will surely give the team some momentum for next weekend's ECAC Championships.

The ECAC Championships will take place Friday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. in Princeton, N.J.
