More softball on tap here at UMass with Day 3 of the A-10 Championships. The action gets underway with a huge game between the league's top two teams in UMass and Fordham at Noon. The baseball team is also in action at Xavier fighting for a berth in its own A-10 Tournament. Check out JTAM for all the latest.

    Good morning everyone. The sun is out, the rain appears to be gone and it is looking like a great day for some A-10 softball. The conference tournament continues today with the Minutewomen kicking off the afternoon's action against Saint Joseph's at noon. Today's Just Take a Minute has news on softball, as well as men's basketball, baseball and more.

    Busy Wednesday here at Just Take A Minute. We will have a major basketball scheduling announcement today, be sure to check back here on UMassAthletics.com. The penultimate UMass Sports Luncheon takes place at 12:15 p.m., in the Campus Center. Softball's Sara Plourde and track's Rachelle Bourque will be honored as Athletes of the Week. Lacrosse' Bobby Hayes will also be recognized as the Male Spring Scholar-Athlete. Also, the A-10 Softball Championships get underway at 1 p.m.

    BASKETBALL

  • Ahhh ... the breaking basketball scheduling news is out in the Springfield Republican. Here is Ron Chimelis' story.

  • Fox Sports.com reports some of the biggest names in the coaching industry will be coming to Massachusetts for a loaded coaching clinic on Sat., May 22. Among those in attendance will be Kansas' Bill Self, former NBA head coach Lawrence Frank and Indiana's Tom Crean. Others expected to speak include new Boston College coach Steve Donahue, UMass coach Derek Kellogg, Wagner head man Dan Hurley and former NBA/college coach John Carroll.

  • The Daily Collegian has an interesting story about John Caliari and UMass assistant coach Vance Walberg and how they could be interesting fits for the Chicago Bulls as candidates as their next head coach.

    FOOTBALL

  • Lots of mentions of UMass Hall of Famer Milt Morin being selected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Here are some of the stories: Springfield Republican, Worcester Telegram, ABC40 and The Sports Network.

  • The Huge hit by Tyler Holmes continues to gain viewers on YouTube. This morning it was just short of 100,000 views. Check it out again to pass that plateau.

    HOCKEY

  • The Chicago Wolves and UMass alum Matt Anderson had their season end last night in the AHL Playoffs as they lost Game 7 to the Texas Stars, 6-5 in overtime. Anderson had an assist in the loss.

    LACROSSE

  • UMass alum Jeff Zywicki will play for his second pro lacrosse championship this weekend as his Washington Stealth will host the Toronto Rock on Saturday at 10:30 p.m., in Everett, Washington. The Stealth pulled off a thrilling, 12-11 win over the Edmonton Rush last Saturday. Zywicki had three goals and two assists in the semifinal. Zywicki and Doc Schneider won the MLL outdoor title in the summer of 2009 with the Toronto Nationals.

    We are in the midst of final exams here at UMass. This afternoon the baseball team will be in action at Quinnipiac for a non-conference affair. Tomorrow the A-10 Softball Championships get underway on campus. Happy Birthday to field hockey's Jaime Bourazeris.

    BASEBALL

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of UMass' midweek game at Quinnipiac today.

  • UMass alum Chad Paronto continues to pitch well for the Pawtucket Red Sox. Paronto hasn't allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings, spanning five outings after he tossed three scoreless innings in a 3-2 loss to the Gwinnett Braves last night. "Chad did a great job and gave us a great effort," praised manager Torey Lovullo. "He attacked the strike zone, which is what we tell all of our relievers."

  • Another former UMass star is pitching great in Triple-A. Matt Torra pitched eight shutout innings as the Reno Aces defeated the Portland Beavers 8-1 at PGE Park on Sunday afternoon. Torra (2-1) retired 16 of the first 18 batters and faced just three batters over the minimum while holding the Beavers (12-18) to four hits and a walk.

    SOFTBALL

  • Check out this chart from Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette as Sara Plourde is currently 18th all-time in NCAA history for strikeouts in a season. She still has the A-10 Tournament and probably NCAA play to add to her total of 501. She's just the 10th pitcher to strikeout 500 in a season and only the fourth sophomore to do so. The feat has been accomplished 18 times. Four pitchers have done it more than once.

    FOOTBALL

  • Its a You Tube sensation! Tyler Holmes' big hit from the UMass Spring Football game is over 80,000 views online after being posted just a week ago. It was featured on ESPN's College Football Live yesterday afternoon. If you haven't seen it, here it is.

    WOMEN'S LACROSSE

  • More on UMass' 15-12 loss in the NCAA Play-In Game at Stanford including mention of the Minutewomen's California native Merritt Cosgrove: San Jose Mercury News and the Daily Collegian.

    HOCKEY

  • Checking in on the AHL Playoffs and UMass alums. The Chicago Wolves and alum Matt Anderson play a Game 7 tonight vs. the Texas Stars in Chicago. Check out the Game Notes. Anderson assisted on both Wolves goals on Sunday and has dished out four helpers in his last two games; the 27-year-old center paces the team and shares second in the AHL with 11 assists in 13 contests this postseason.

  • . The Worcester Sharks' season ended last Friday with a loss to the Manchester Monarchs. UMass products Justin Braun and Cory Quirk played in all 11 postseason games. Each posted three points. Matt Irwin and James Marcou also made one appearance, apiece.

    It was a busy weekend with the softball team capturing four games, all by shutout, and the baseball team winning its fifth A-10 series in a row taking two-of-three at Dayton with 44 runs in the trio of games. The rowing and track teams had some great performances while the women's lacrosse season came to an end with a valiant battle at Stanford, 15-12.

    SOFTBALL

  • The softball team the A-10 undefeated with a 17-0-1 record. This weekend, the Minutewomen didn't allow a run in four shutout wins.   • The 2010 Men's Lacrosse NCAA Tournament Bracket was released last night. Two CAA foes made the tournament with Hofstra taking on No. 3 Maryland in the first round and CAA Champion Delware playing at No. 4 seed North Carolina. Also an opponent next season Army -- plays at No. 2 Syracuse.

    WOMEN'S LACROSSE

  • On the women's side, here are the 2010 NCAA pairings with many UMass foes in action: No. 1 Maryland hosts Marist, No. 2 Northwestern hosts Notre Dame, local rival Boston University plays at No. 8 Penn. Recent play-in foe Stanford travels to No. 5 James Madison.
