PRINCETON, N.J. - The UMass men's and women's track and field teams were in action on Friday in the beginning of a three day championship event. For the men, it is the heavily competitive IC4A Championships, while for the women's side it's the ECAC Championships, highly anticipated as well. After one day of competition, the men stand an impressive fourth among 15 teams with 11 points, while the women posted one point, good enough for 21st place as a unit.

For the men, the string of day one luck came in the 10,000 meter run as a trio of senior Minutemen had solid performances in the 10,000 meter run. Nicolai Naranjo, Jonathan Pierce, and Jason Ayr took third, sixth, and seventh respectively. Naranjo led the unit with a team's season best time of 30:39.44, while Pierce crossed the line at 30:49.85, and Ayr at 30:51.96.

Andrew McCann also competed in the 5,000 meter run for UMass. The fourth senior competing for the men on Friday took 22nd place in the event with a time of 14:39.83. Currently McCann holds the fourth best school mark ever in the 10,000 meter run.

On the women's side it was the unit of Shiyi Zan, Karen Roa, and Lisa Wilson competing for UMass on day one. The top finisher for the Minutewomen, was the outstanding Wilson in the discus throw. She posted a mark of 147-07, good enough for eighth place. Next up was Zan in the 10K, placing 17th overall with a time of 38:08.42. Just a sophomore, Roa took 20th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, crossing the line at 10:46.19 to improve upon her own school record in the event.

Both the men and women will return to action for day two-of-three on Saturday. The meet is set to commence for both sides at 10 am.
