MEN'S BASKETBALL

    BASEBALL

  • The baseball picked up its biggest win of the season as the Minutemen knocked off Boston College, 8-4. Read about it in the Daily Collegian and Daily Hampshire Gazette.

  • UMass alum Chris Antonetti is the subject of a feature on MLB.com. The next opportunity that awaits Antonetti is the general manager's post with the Cleveland Indians -- a job currently occupied by soon-to-be team president Mark Shapiro. Antonetti will assume the GM position at the conclusion of a 2010 season that is already off to a difficult start for the youthful Tribe and could remain an uphill battle.

    SOFTBALL

  • The softball team played in a slugfest, and came out on top, beating Boston University, 7-5, yesterday. Here are some recaps: Daily Collegian and Daily Hampshire Gazette.

    FOOTBALL

  • We are coming down the home stretch for the NFL Draft and Vladimir Ducasse continues to draw attention. He is mentioned on Dallas Cowboys.com as the team's second round pick. The site says: "Any time you dip into the second round, you're going to give up something. With Ducasse, it's certainly experience. You can't find a draft report about the UMass tackle that doesn't include words such as "raw" and "green." But they also have those draft-day favorites such as "upside" and "potential," not to mention an enormous athletic ability. Ducasse would be a project, and the Cowboys really already have that in Robert Brewster from last year's draft. But unless you get a first-round tackle, he's probably not going to even compete with Doug Free next season. So the Cowboys go for potential in Ducasse and hope Hudson Houck can work his magic again."

  • Seacoast Online has news on the late Bob Pickett. The former Portsmouth High School football coach, who passed away in February at the age of 75, will be honored by the Maine Sports Hall of Fame during its annual banquet and induction June 13 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. The officers and directors of the MSHF elected to honor Pickett by designating the 10 annual recipients of $1,500 scholarships as Robert A. Pickett Memorial Student-Athlete Awards. In addition, the President's Award for 2010 will be accepted in Pickett's name by his widow, Sylvia.

    TENNIS

  • The Daily Collegian looks back at Senior Day as Maude Lecluyse was honored prior to the win over Quinnipiac.

    TRACK & FIELD

  • The quick turn-around from last weekend's meet is an unusual one for UMass, which typically has about a week in between events, which will test the mental and physical toughness of its athletes. UMass women's coach Julie LaFreniere said that she was pleased with the performance of her team members in the UMass Nine-Way meet, but that they are not used to outdoor conditions and need to tune-up.   • Don't Miss This: UMass Sports Luncheon takes center stage at 12:15 p.m., as the Winter Scholar-Athletes will be honored. Also Athletic Director John McCutcheon will be the featured speaker. Also at night, the Baseball Beanpot kicks off in Brockton as UMass takes on Northeastern at 7 p.m.

    Tony Gaffney will reportedly be signing with the Boston Celtics today and could play tonight at the Chicago Bulls. Check back for the official announcement. The baseball and softball teams head to Beantown team as the Minutemen take on BC at 3 p.m., and the Minutewomen face BU at 5 p.m. The men's lacrosse team is now ranked 12th in the country in both the coaches and media polls.

    BASKETBALL

  • 2009 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year Tony Gaffney is close to signing with the Boston Celtics for the end of the regular-season. Read about it on ABC40, and Masslive.com.

    FOOTBALL

  • The San Francisco 49ers will be hosting Vladimir Ducasse for a visit and interview as they prepare for the NFL Draft. More from the Sacramento Bee.

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • The team is No. 12 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Minutemen have stiff competition left as they have to play No. 9 Georgetown next week as part of the ESPNU Warrior Classic and No. 7 Drexel the following week in Philly.

  • On Inside Lacrosse and ESPNU, expert analyst Quint Kessenich has UMass at No. 11 in his weekly Power Rankings.

  • Emily Boucher's first-place finish in the Singles Final helped make sure the Massachusetts rowing team was able to stack up well against the likes of Duke, Connecticut, West Virginia and others in this past weekend's Knecht Cup regatta in Camden, N.J. Read about it in the Daily Collegian.

    The busiest weekend on campus in UMass Athletics was a mostly successful one with the baseball and softball teams winning two games apiece. The women's track team captured its 9-Way Meet and the men took second. On Monday, it is time for tennis' Senior Day as Maude Lecluyse will be honored before the match with Quinnipiac.     MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Review #7 UMass' tough 10-9 loss to Towson on Saturday. The Minutemen's three losses this season are all by one goal. Recaps in: Springfield Republican, Daily Hampshire Gazette, Daily Collegian and Lax Power.

  • The Daily Collegian has a sidebar on the injury to attackman Art Kell, who missed his second game in a row.

  • The Baltimore Sun has a webblog with ESPNU analyst Mark Dixon where he mentions UMass. "I also think that UMass is very dangerous. They've got a very good defender in [senior] Diogo Godoi, a good middie in [senior] Bobby Hayes, a nice attackman in [sophomore] Art Kell, and that's a team that has beaten Hofstra and Brown. I thought earlier in the season, it was going to be between Hofstra and Drexel in the CAA [Colonial Athletic Association]. But now you're looking at UMass."

    SOFTBALL

    WOMEN'S LACROSSE

    HOCKEY

  • The Worcester Sharks played all four UMass products this weekend as they qualified for the AHL playoffs where they will face the Lowell Devils. The Sharks lost to Portland, 5-2, in their regular-season finale. The Worcester lineup had 12 rookies including four from UMass -- Cory Quirk, James Marcou, Justin Braun and Matt Irwin. The only other time four former amateur teammates played together for the Sharks was in 2007-08, when Lukas Kaspar, Derek Joslin, Brad Staubitz and Jamie McGinn -- of the Ottawa 67s -- did it. ... Braun was plus-2 yesterday and began his pro career by going 0-3-3 and plus-7 in three games.

  • Casey Wellman closed out the NHL season with the Minnesota Wild in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars and is mentioned in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune as he scored his first-career goal, nine seconds into the third period. "It was definitely a different feeling just to have all those fans cheering for me. It was really cool," said Wellman, who finished with four points in 12 games. "I've been pretty close a few times. I got robbed by [Columbus' R.J.] Umberger in my first game, so I was beginning to wonder if it would happen. It was good to get it out of the way, and hopefully it'll open something up for next year."

  • Goalie Jon Quick has led the Los Angeles Kings to the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. The Kings will face the Vancouver Canucks in the First Round of the NHL Playoffs. Action starts Thursday at GM Place. The Kings closed the season with a 2-1 win on Sunday, beating the Colorado Avalanche.

  • UMass alum Peter Trovato is mentioned in the South Coast Times. Joshua Harrington of Swansea came away with Lucic's game sweater on Fan Appreciation Day, one of 24 fans to receive them off the backs of Bruins on the ice after the game. The 7-year-old boy, whose father, Army Sgt. Kyle Harrington, was killed in Iraq, is among the many children who will benefit from the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, which offers college tuition to the children of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Peter Trovato, a former UMass and minor-league hockey player who founded the scholarship program, was in attendance.

    BASKETBALL

  • UMass alum Tony Barbee is settling into his new job as the head coach at Auburn and he will be surrounded by familiar faces as he is bringing is staff from UTEP including fellow UMass grad Mike Babul as director of operations. Read about it in the Opelika Auburn News. Babul played at UMass while Barbee was an assistant coach and also worked alongside him for one season at Memphis as an assistant director of basketball operations. Babul lettered at UMass from 1997-2000 and served as the team's captain during his senior season. Babul also spent one season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State.

    FOOTBALL

  • The site SB Nation pegs UMass' Vladimir Ducasse as the 49th overall selection by the San Francisco 49ers in its mock draft.

  • The site Arrowhead Pride, which covers the Kansas City Chiefs has a look at Ducasse.

  • Former head coach Don Brown is having success recruiting in Florida as the defensive coordinator at Maryland. The site Testudo Times points to Brown's time at UMass as part of the connection.

    No student-athlete birthdays on April 12.
