The busiest weekend on campus in UMass Athletics gets underway this afternoon with three contests. The tennis team hosts Albany at 2 p.m., the No. 22 softball squad welcomes Charlotte for the first of two games and the baseball team seeks a win against Richmond also at 3 p.m. On Saturday, five teams including the No. 7 men's lacrosse team will be in action here in Amherst.

FOOTBALL

  • In USA Today Vladimir Ducasse is the subject of a feature by Tom Pedulla. He writes: "Why he can make the jump: Native of Haiti appears to have huge upside as he continues to learn nuances of sport after moving to U.S. in 2002. Has long arms and natural mass. Moves extremely well for his size. Determined competitor and eager student of game. Intelligence reflected in his grasp of three languages."

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • The Virginian-Pilot has a story centered around Ricky Harris, who is hopeful of getting a chance to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. Harris is an alternate awaiting an injury to one of the 64 players invited to the camp in Virginia. But Harris hasn't gotten the chance yet.

    SOFTBALL

  • The softball team will try to solidify its hold on first place when it hosts fellow undefeated Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte at 3 p.m. today and at noon Saturday. Here is a preview from the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

    WOMEN'S LACROSSE

  • The Daily Collegian previews today's game at Duquesne, which finishes as a six-game road trip, as UMass has won three in a row, all in the A-10.

  • The Daily Collegian also takes a look at UMass' improved defense which has been key to the team's success.

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • In the Baltimore Sun, ESPNU analyst Mark Dixon is the subject of a Q&A session where he mentions UMass in relation to Loyola and its chances of winning its conference this season.

  • The Washington Examiner mentions UMass' game with Towson on Saturday. "With one-goal loses to Harvard and Yale, the Minutemen could easily be undefeated. UMass is no fluke, ranking No. 5 in scoring margin (plus 3.9 per game)."

  • The Daily Collegian looks back at Towson's 10-7 win over UMBC on Wednesday night. The Tigers have now won two games in a row and stand at 3-5.

  • Recruit Ryan Izzo is mentioned in the preview of his Walpole H.S. team in the Walpole Times.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • The Worcester Telegram has an update on the Holy Cross coaching search. The Crusaders will play at UMass next season.

    HOCKEY

  • Greg Mauldin made his Islanders debut in No. 62 as his squad dropped a 7-3 loss in the final regular-season game at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh. Mauldin played 10:02 and had two shots.

  • Casey Wellman had his third assist in 11 games played with Minnesota as the Wild defeated Calgary 2-1 last night. He logged 16 minutes of ice time and had three shots.

  • Jon Quick and the L.A. Kings were also in action suffering a 3-2 shootout loss to Phoenix. Quick made 25 saves.

  • Friday night will be College Night at the Worcester Sharks as they host the Hartford Wolfpack at the DCU Center. The Sharks sent a flyer to UMass promoting the game as fans can see Justin Braun, Matt Irwin, James Marcou and Cory Quirk in action. You can get a free buffet meal courtesy of V Amendment by showing a ticket to the game and a valid college ID.

    UMass will have its third player in the NHL as Greg Mauldin has been called up to play with the New York Islanders tonight at Pittsburgh. The No. 22 softball team continued to roll with its eighth win in a row yesterday, beating BU, 3-0 in the home opener. Just Take a Minute has news on lots of teams including men's lacrosse. Rookie Will Manny was named the among the Top 3 Freshmen in the country by Inside Lacrosse at the midway point of the 2010. You can listen to coach Greg Cannella on the UMass Lacrosse Radio Show today at 5 p.m., on WMUA.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • New coach Sharon Dawley held a press conference in Vermont to say good bye to the Catamounts. Read about it in the Burlington Free Press.

    SOFTBALL

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Inside Lacrosse has ranked the Top 10 freshmen in the nation at the midway point of the 2010 season and UMass' Will Manny is pegged at No. 3 by the source for all things lacrosse. IL writes: "The Minutemen's second-leading scorer, Manny got his first start and notched four points last week against Penn State. He's been instrumental to UMass's ability to reload."

  • The Daily Collegian looks at the UMass Senior class which will be honored on Saturday before the 1 p.m., CAA clash vs. Towson.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of the UMass-Towson game as well.

  • Sophomore Anthony Toresco is mentioned in his hometown paper in Hunterdon County Democrat .

    BASEBALL

  • Baseball's 15-11 loss to UConn is chronicled in the Daily Collegian, Daily Hampshire Gazette and The Examiner.

    HOCKEY

  • The Worcester Sharks aka UMass Central Mass, topped the Hartford Wolfpack 9-2 in a franchise record for goals in a game. Justin Braun was the No. 2 star as he had three assists. James Marcou also scored his first pro goal in the win. Cory Quirk had his eighth goal of the season. The game is also covered in the Hartford Courant.

  • All of UMass' connections with the AHL Worcester Sharks are mentioned in the Worcester Telegram. The Sharks are seeking to clinch their division as they head into the playoffs.

    ROWING

    SWIMMING

  • UMass' swimming brothers Ryan and Justin Brooks are featured in the Boston Globe. And the last two seasons, the duo teamed up on the men's swimming and diving team at UMass, an experience they both describe as "unforgettable.'' "It's been great,'' said Justin Brooks, a senior who will graduate as the program's record-holder in the 1,650-yard freestyle, a mark he set in winning the 2008 Atlantic-10 championship.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • The men's lacrosse team has its highest ranking since March 2006 as the Minutemen are No. 7 in the USILA Coaches Poll.

The Cyclones, who lost their regular-season finale 4-1 Saturday night at Wheeling, will play the South Carolina Stingrays in the opening round of the Kelly Cup playoffs. The best-of-5 series will begin at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Game 2 is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • As the Western Mass Pioneers near the kickoff of their 2010 season, West Springfield native, Chris Roswess, becomes their second official roster signing. Roswess is a standout junior at the University of Massachusetts and will be putting his gifted speed and footwork in the forward position as a Pioneer in the PDL. Check out the press release.

    ATHLETICS

  • UMass team physician Dr. Pierre Rouzier is featured in a story in the Springfield Republican. Rouzier, a family physician and sports team doctor at the University of Massachusetts, along with his UMass colleagues, nurse Will G. Moye and pharmacist Christine H. Marsh, and Dr. Paul Gerstein from Mary Lane Hospital in Ware spent nine days in Leogane, Haiti, last month aiding the situation. Rouzier's father was born in Haiti, but fled the country in the 1940s. Rouzier had not visited the country since he was in high school.

    Great weekend for many UMass teams. The No. 9 men's lacrosse, No. 23 softball team and women's lacrosse teams combined to win four important conference games. The trio of teams have a perfect 10-0 record in conference action this season. Check back on Monday for the latest on the lacrosse polls to see if the Minutemen rise from No. 9.

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Senior Tewaaraton Trophy Candidate Diogo Godoi is mentioned on Inside Lacrosse by Christian Swezey as one of the weekend's top performers. The veteran journalist wrote: "Starting defenseman had four caused turnovers and held his man scoreless in a 10-8 victory over Penn State. Godoi defended Matt Mackrides, who entered with 25 goals. Godoi's most important caused turnover came in the final minute. Penn State trailed 9-8 but had possession when Godoi intercepted a pass. The Minutemen cleared the ball and scored the clinching goal seconds later."

Matt Irwin also made his debut in the game. Justin Braun has not played yet. The Worcester Telegram mentions Irwin and Marcou's pro debuts.

  • Justin Braun's signing with the San Jose Sharks is mentioned in his hometown paper in Minnesota in the Pioneer Press.

    FOOTBALL

  • In its latest mock NFL Draft, Pro Football Weekly pegs Vladimir Ducasse going to the New York Jets with the 29th overall selection -- in the first round.

  • In PFW's Draft Value Chart, Ducasse is listed as a Day 2 "A" selection meaning the top of the second round.
