A full weekend of UMass action -- all on the road -- gets underway this afternoon when the softball is back in action against Illinois-Chicago at 5 p.m. ET, out in San Diego. The #25 Minutewomen also take on San Diego at 7:30 p.m. The baseball team continues its spring break trip at William & Mary, seeking its first win of the season at 7 p.m. JTAM has lots of stories on UMass alums as well.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • With the NCAA Tournament underway, many with UMass connections were in action on Thursday.

    - Baylor fended off a pesky Sam Houston State team, 68-59, for the Bears first win in the NCAA Tournament in 60 years. The Bears' AD is former UMass AD Ian McCaw and the hoops team's director of operations Tim Maloney is UMass' former Associate Head Coach.

    - UMass alum Tony Barbee and UTEP had its season end on Thursday in a 77-59 loss to Butler.

    - Atlantic 10 for Richmond fell to Saint Mary's 80-71, to finish its season.

    - In the biggest upset of the night, Ohio beat Georgetown, 97-83. Former UMass Associate AD for Compliance Tricia Turley is in the same role at Ohio U.

    - And of course, John Calipari and Kentucky easily handled East Tennessee State, 100-71.

    HOCKEY

  • The Springfield Republican writes about three UMass players who were honored by Hockey East: senior defenseman Justin Braun earning a spot on the first team, junior forward James Marcou made the second team, and sophomore forward Casey Wellman was an honorable mention all-star.

  • The Boston Globe looks at today's Hockey East Semifinals. "UMass was a difficult obstacle to overcome,'' said BC coach Jerry York. "We felt very good about advancing.''

  • Casey Wellman did NOT make his NHL debut last night at Nashville in a 5-0 Wild loss. He could make his pro debut on Friday night according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Pioneer Press. Head coach Todd Richards said he's "leaning toward" Wellman making his NHL debut Friday night in Columbus.

    BASEBALL

  • In the Springfield Republican, Ron Chimelis has another mention of UMass alum Chad Paronto. He writes: "Guy's pitched once, an inning and two-thirds of hitless ball. He's a veteran (34). He's a UMass guy. Give him another chance, Tito."

    SOFTBALL

  • The Daily Hampshire Gazette has a recap of the UMass' win over Kansas in its first game out in California. Here is the review from Kansas' perspective. Also the Topeka Capital Journal has this blurb.

    FOOTBALL

  • The Foxboro Reporter mentions UMass football signee Mike Delaney, who was honored at the Foxboro Banquet. He was named Most Valuable Player award for his role both offensively (as a running back) and defensively (as a safety).

    WOMEN'S LACROSSE

  • Former lacrosse player Tracey Drown is coaching girls lacrosse at Braintree High School. She is mentioned in this story from the Braintree Forum. "We're very pleased to get Tracey Drown to be our new head girls lacrosse coach," said AD Mike Denise."She has college experience, having played at Towson and UMass and then coaching at UMass and BU (Boston University)."

    Let the Madness begin! The NCAA men's basketball tournament gets underway today. UMass alum Tony Barbee coaches his UTEP Miners against Butler today at 4:45 p.m. At 5 p.m., listen to the UMass Lacrosse Radio Show on WMUA 91.1. Happy Birthday to tailback Jonathan Hernandez, as No. 22 turns 22. The softball team begins action in San Diego at 7:30 p.m., vs. Kansas.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day! Casey Wellman is wearing the green of the Minnesota Wild after signing with the NHL club on Tuesday. Wednesday means its the UMass Sports Luncheon at 12:15 p.m., in the Campus Center. Diver Jason Cook will be honored as the Athlete of the Week. Women's lacrosse coach Alexis Venechanos is among the guest speakers.

    HOCKEY

  • Casey Wellman officially signed with the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday and nearly make his NHL debut that night, but he was a late scratch. He is expected to play with the team later this week.     Time to get back to action for UMass' spring teams on Tuesday. The men's lacrosse team hosts Providence at 3 p.m., at Garber Field in the only home event over the next week. The baseball team moves over to Norman, Oklahoma to face the Sooners at 8 p.m. The tennis team begins its spring break trip against Charleston Southern.

    No Student-Athlete Birthdays on March 16.

    MEN'S LACROSSE

  • The USILA Poll was released on Monday and UMass is listed second among "Others Receiving Votes." Its the first time this season the Minutemen are out of the Top 20. UMass opponents are ranked all over the poll: No. 6 Hofstra, No. 9 Georgetown, No. 12 Drexel, No. 14 Harvard, No. 17 Yale and No. 20 Brown.

  • In the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, the Minutemen are listed fifth among "Others Receiving Votes." UMass opponents come in at: No. 6 Hofstra, No. 10 Georgetown, No. 11 Harvard, No. 16 Drexel, No. 17 Brown, No. 19 Delaware and No. 20 Yale.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Two UMass opponents from this past season will have new coaches when the teams play in 2010-11. Both Charlotte and UCF made changes at the top on Monday.   • Former UMass all-conference defensive back Tracy Belton is playing in Arena Football League with the Milwaukee Iron. Here is a breakdown on the Iron roster from the Examiner. Tracy Belton (WR/DB, 6-0, 175) This speedster played for Landsee in Af2 as a member of the Green Bay Blizzard. Belton ranked among the AFL leaders in 2008 in Arkansas with six interceptions and 34 passes defended. He was a First-Team All Atlantic 10 defensive back at UMass.

    BASEBALL

  • SoonerSports.com has a preview of this week's series at Oklahoma on Tuesday. The No. 13 Sooners are 15-2 this season, a tall task for the Minutemen.

    The basketball and hockey seasons at UMass came to an end over the weekend with losses in the conference tournaments. It was a tough weekend overall for the UMass squads, but they will look to get back on track this week. The postseason men's basketball tournament brackets were announced on Sunday night and several UMass alums will be taking their squads into the NCAA Tournament including UTEP's Tony Barbee and Louisville's Rick Pitino. Two former UMass coaches also have teams in the NCAAs: John Calipari with Kentucky and Travis Ford with Oklahoma State.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • With the NCAA Tournament bracket unveiled, there are many connections to UMass. Alums Tony Barbee leads UTEP into the tournament for the first time while Rick Pitino will be back in the NCAAs with Louisville. Two former UMass coaches also have teams in the NCAAs: John Calipari with Kentucky and Travis Ford with Oklahoma State.

  • The Atlantic 10 had a great tournament with three teams being selected: No. 5 seed Temple, No. 6 seed Xavier and No. 7 Richmond. Three other UMass opponents from the season were selected to the NCAAs: Baylor, Cornell ad Michigan State.

  • Additionally in the NIT, two A-10 teams were selected for the Bracket: No. 2 seed Rhode Island and No. 3 seed Dayton. Three other UMass non-conference foes were selected to that field: No. 3 seed Memphis, No. 4 seed Seton Hall and No. 8 seed Quinnipiac.

  • In the ECHL, Chris Davis scored his ninth goal of the season for the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday. The Nailers won the 173rd and last game in their long and storied rivalry with the Johnstown Chiefs with a 4-1 victory Saturday night at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Chiefs are closing out their 22nd and last season in Johnstown and will move to Greenville, SC next season.

  • The Acme Packing Company, a blog for the Green Bay Packers also mentions the team possibly selecting Ducasse.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • UMass-bound Talen Watson had a great weekend as her high school Arundel captured the Class 4A State Championship in a win over Gaithersburg, 53-40. The Baltimore Sun has a recap as Watson scored 16 points, including 10 in the decisive fourth quarter.
