Hamel Named To Academic All-District First Team

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior forward Ashley Hamel has been named to the women's soccer CoSIDA ESPN Academic All-District I first team, it was announced on Tuesday. Hamel, who is now eligible for Academic All-America status, is the first Minutewoman to earn a first team selection since Kaelyn Caldwell in 2007.

Hamel, one of three forwards on the all-district team, which is selected by position, holds a 3.78 grade-point average as a Biology major. On the field this season, she has played in 16 games, starting 15. Despite missing two matches due to injury, Hamel is fourth on the squad in scoring with eight points on two goals and four assists.

Both of her tallies, the first two of her career, have been game-winners, coming in overtime against New Hampshire and at Fairfield. Hamel leads the Minutewomen in assists and has nearly tripled her career point total this season. She enters the Atlantic 10 tournament with 11 career points on two goals and seven assists over 70 matches and 48 starts.

UMass will be in action on Thursday evening, Nov. 4 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament facing No. 4 seed St. Bonaventure at 7:30 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
