Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland scored two goals in the first 7:44, but from there UMass played the No. 1 Terrapins (20-1) even as the No. 18 Minutewomen (15-8) fell to the overall No. 1 seed and host, 4-2 in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship first round at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex on Saturday. Seniors Makaela Potts and Jaime Bourazeris scored UMass goals in their final game in the Maroon & White.

UMass concludes the 2010 season with a 15-8 record after winning its 12th Atlantic 10 Championship and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament field of 16, the program's 22nd NCAA appearance. It was the Minutewomen's third trip to the NCAAs in four seasons under head coach Justine Sowry.

After the Terrapins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead 7:44 into the game, the Minutewomen rebounded and played the nation's top-ranked team even, 2-2 the rest of the game, outscoring Maryland 1-0 and outshooting it 5-4 in the second half.

UMass tallied the only goal of the second half to pull within two when Bourazeris tipped in a Potts shot off a penalty corner in the 56th minute for the senior's fourth goal of the season. Potts assisted on the play, her fourth of the season and 18th of her career. The goal was Bourazeris' 16th career tally.

The Terrapins led 4-1 at halftime after holding a 13-4 first period shot advantage. Katie O'Donnell scored in the 15th minute and Janessa Pope scored in the 20th minute to extend a one-goal Terps lead to three at the half.

Potts made it a one-goal game, 2-1 in the 13th minute when she scored her sixth goal of the season and 20th of her career on UMass' first shot of the day. The senior blasted a shot off a penalty corner with Bourazeris and Nikki Panciocco assisting.

Maryland jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Ali McEvoy scored the game's first goal on a penalty stroke 3:01 into the game and Hayley Turner scored in the eighth minute off a deflection on a penalty corner.

Seniors Bourazeris, Potts, and Katie Kelly, who created several scoring opportunities in the game, particularly in the second half, end their careers as the most successful UMass class in a decade, winning three Atlantic 10 Championships and appearing in NCAA Tournaments while posting a 58-31 record.

Kelly leaves UMass in the top-10 all-time in career goals (36, tied for seventh), assists (21, eighth), and points (93, sixth).

Maryland moves on to Sunday's second round where it will face the winner of Connecticut and American.
