Minutewomen Cruise Past West Chester, 3-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Kim Young, Thando Zono, and Lindsay Bowman each scored a goal with Katie Kelly assisting on two of them to lead UMass field hockey (12-6, 6-0 A-10 to a 3-0 victory over West Chester on Friday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field. The win improves the Minutewomen to 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play heading into Sunday's regular season finale at La Salle and runs their winning streak to eight games.
UMass remains alone in first place in the A-10 with the victory while its eight-game winning streak ties Ohio State and Maryland for the second-longest active streak in the country.
Alesha Widdall made four saves in goal to record her sixth shutout of the season and the 19th of the junior's career.
Young started the scoring just 8:33 into the game for the sophomore's first tally of the season.
The Minutewomen would continue to lead 1-0 until 8:47 into the second half when Zono scored her fifth goal of the season, all coming in the last four games. Kelly registered the assist as UMass took a 2-0 lead.
Bowman closed the scoring in the 55th minute when the freshman converted off a Kelly pass for her third of the season. The assist was the senior captain Kelly's seventh of the season and runs her team-leading point total to 27 on the season.
For the game, UMass outshot the Golden Rams, 12-5, and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
UMass closes the season on Sunday at La Salle in a noon contest. The Atlantic 10 Championship will be held at Temple's Geasey Field on Nov. 5-6.
