KINGSTON, R.I. - An early second half goal was the only scoring in the match as Rhode Island edged UMass in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutewomen at 5-9 on the season, 2-3 conference play, while the Rams move to 2-11-1, 2-3 in the A-10.
Though the squad was out-shot, 4-2 in the opening period, UMass had the bulk of the scoring opportunities in the half. The Minutewomen played several dangerous balls into the box, but were unable to connect on any of the scoring chances.
UMass freshman Brittany Moore had the first shot of the match for either side in the 29th minute. However, her free kick attempt was grabbed by Sasha Reiber.
Just 48 seconds into the second half, Stephanie Santos collected a pass from Courtney David and fired a shot into the net off the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Emersyn Pullan.
The Minutewomen's best chance to net an equalizer came at 55:36 as Moore served a free kick into the box that was brought down by sophomore Jenna Goodwin. However, Goodwin's attempt to chip the ball in from 10 yards out was denied by Reiber.
A total of seven cards were issued in what was a highly physical contest, along with 16 fouls against Rhode Island and 10 against UMass. The Minutewomen played the final 56 seconds of the match with 10 players after senior Kelsey Anderson was sent off at 89:04 following her second yellow card of the afternoon.
Rhode Island finished with a 9-4 edge in shots, including 5-2 on goal. Pullan played 74:33 in net for UMass and made three saves, while sophomore Emily Cota relieved her and stopped one shot. Reiber earned the shutout for the Rams and registered two stops.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Friday, Oct. 22, when the squad will play host to Temple at 4 p.m. on Rudd Field.
