UMass is the place to be for home games and beautiful weather this weekend! Eight games in three days starting this afternoon at 3 p.m. The women's lacrosse team seeks the Atlantic 10 regular-season title against Duquesne at 3 p.m. Also on campus, the softball team hosts GW and the baseball squad begins at a three-game set with Saint Joseph's, both starting at 3 p.m. Two A-10 titles will be handed out this weekend as the tennis team begins its quest this afternoon against Dayton outside of Pittsburgh. The rowing team seeks its 13th A-10 crown on Saturday in Camden, N.J. Finally, tonight is a big night for UMass men's lacrosse assistant coach Jake Coon, who will be inducted into the Nazareth College Sports Hall of Fame.
UMass men's lacrosse assistant coach Jake Coon will be inducted into the Nazareth College Sports Hall of Fame tonight in Rochester, N.Y. Coon, of Homer, N.Y., was a four-time All-American as a four-year starting goalie for the men's lacrosse team. He was named Goalie of the Year in both 1998 and 2000, and helped Nazareth win a national championship in 1997. He holds several records, including most career saves (769) and most saves in a game (32).
On the women's lacrosse front, Amy Farnum Novin of NCAAsports.com has a feature story on goalie Katie Florence and how being coached by one of the great collegiate goalkeepers in NCAA and Maryland history, Alexis Venechanos, has helped her become one of the best in the Atlantic 10 and a front-runner for the league's Rookie of the Year honor. Florence is just one of many great goalkeepers at UMass in the past few years including her men's lacrosse counter part Doc Schneider, men's soccer goalie Zack Simmons, men's hockey goalies Paul Dainton, Dan Meyers, and Jon Quick, and field hockey goalie Alesha Widdall.
The Collegian looks at the A-10 rowing championship where UMass seeks to return to the top after finishing second to Rhode Island last year after 12 straight crowns.

In Kentucky, former UMass head coach John Calipari has hired two former Wildcats for his staff at UK. He has brought on Tony Delk and Scott Padgett to assist him in Lexington. Delk helped Kentucky beat John Calipari?s UMass team in the Final Four in 1996, en route to a national title and also played with the Celtics.

What a power surge by UMass baseball and softball. The baseball team had five long balls in a 12-8 win over Boston College, its second win over BC in just over a week. While the Minutemen were topping the Eagles, softball was taking care of business against Boston University, smacking three solo home runs of its own on the way to a 3-0 victory. On Wednesday, senior lax goalie Doc Schneider was named a nominee for college lacrosse's most prestigious award, the Tewaarton Trophy given to the nation's best player. The Minutemen have already played three from the list (Jordan Burke, Jay Card, and Shane Koppens) and are set to face three more (Matt Abbott, Dan Hardy, and Kenny Nims) when Syracuse comes to town on April 25.

Wednesday marked Day One of the Stanley and Calder Cup Playoffs. A UMass connection was in action as former defenseman Mike Kostka and the Portland Pirates took a 1-0 series lead with a 3-0 win at Providence. Alex Berry's team, the Toronto Marlies, also played at Manitoba, but he did not play.

Congrats to UMass pitcher Brandice Balschmiter on career win No. 109! The senior from Newark, N.Y., broke Danielle Henderson's record in style with a no-hitter against Providence on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the softball team is back in action against Boston University at 5 p.m. at home. The baseball team hosts Boston College at 3 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field. Wednesday also brings the UMass Sports Luncheon at the Campus Center Room 1009. Lacrosse coach Greg Cannella will speak about Saturday's game against Georgetown. Also, the "Voice of the Minutemen" Josh Maurer will speak about the 100 Seasons of UMass Basketball video documentary which will be out this late spring.

Here's a must read. In his Daily Hampshire Gazette blog, Matt Vautour asked Josh Maurer to write about the passing of legendary Phillies announcer Harry Kalas. Maurer grew up listening to Kalas and calls him his "idol" in and the reason why he got into broadcasting.
The Brockton Enterprise News has a great feature on baseball's Adam Tempesta. He is second in career hits at UMass with 206 and has been above .300 in all four seasons at UMass. He has had at least one hit in 121 of the 161 games he's played for the Minutemen.

The Los Angeles Clippers and UMass National Player of the Year Marcus Camby finishes his first season with the Clips on Wednesday night at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Check back for his final season stats on Thursday.

The men's lacrosse polls came out Monday and UMass is up to No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse/Nike Media Poll while moving to a tie for No. 15 in the USILA Coaches Poll. ESPN lacrosse expert Quint Kessenich has UMass at No. 9 in his poll.
On Inside Lacrosse, fans can vote for Doc Schneider for the MVP of the Weekend. Schneider made a career-high 21 saves in the win over Hobart to earn his fifth ECAC Defensive Player of the Week this season.
Former UMass lacrosse All-Amercian Tom Malone will be inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Friday, May 8, as part of the NJCAA Men's Invitational Lacrosse Championship Weekend. Malone was an NJCAA All American Attackman in 1967 and 1968 at Nassau Community College, where he was a two-year captain. In 1968, he was the leading scorer in the country and Nassau's Most Valuable Player. His career continued at the University of Massachusetts where he was named NCAA All American in 1969 and 1970.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette mentions two UMass stars from the 1950s, who were named to the All-Decade Team as part of the 100 Seasons Of UMass Basketball. The 1950s teams included former Classical High and Worcester Academy standout Dick Eid and former St. John's star Jack Foley.

Another big weekend of wins for UMass teams. The No. 14 men's lacrosse team pulled off an amazing last-second rally to beat Hobart in overtime, 7-6. The No. 17 softball team swept two games from Saint Joseph's. The women's lacrosse team continued to stay unbeaten in the A-10 at 5-0 with a 16-4 win over Temple. The baseball team won two of three at Saint Louis. Monday is big for the baseball team as the Minutemen look to defend their Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park against Northeastern at 5 p.m. JTAM has news on all these teams as well as Tony Gaffney and Chris Lowe finishing up at the Portsmouth Invitational, NBA Predraft Camp. Also Jon Quick and Thomas Pock finished their biggest seasons in the NHL.

At Portsmouth, Tony Gaffney averaged 6.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in three games. Chris Lowe racked up 5.3 points and 4.0 assists per game. Check the cumulative statistics from the PIT here.
UMass All-American Gary Forbes finished his D-League season with Tulsa 66ers. He averaged 18.0 PPG, 5.7 RPG and 4.0 APG for the 66ers after being traded from the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Former UMass basketball player Matt Glass has announced he will be transferring to Vermont to play his final two seasons with the Catamounts.
More hoops news. The Worcester Telegram & Gazette has an extensive feature on former UMass star Lorenzo Sutton, a member of the All-1980s team. Sutton has gone through some adversity on his life which is chronicled in this story.
The NHL regular-season wrapped up on Sunday. UMass alums Jon Quick and Thomas Pock finished up their most extensive seasons in the NHL. In 44 games, Quick went 21-18-2 with a 2.48 GAA and 91.4 save percentage for the Los Angeles Kings. Pock played in 59 games with a goal and two assists for the New York Islanders. Neither team made the playoffs.
Congrats to Hockey East foe Boston University on their miracle comeback to win the NCAA hockey title. The Terriers scored twice in the final minute of regulation and then took the crown in OT, 4-3 over Miami (Ohio).
