UMass Falls To Army In Close Match, 4-3

WEST POINT, N.Y. - After a successful two days of tennis the UMass women's tennis team fell just short, losing to Army on Sunday, 4-3. The Minutewomen (6-5) lost to the Black Knights last year by the same close margin. UMass won the doubles point to start off the match with wins at both Nos. 2 (9-8) and 3 (8-3). Magdalena Ploch at No. 2 singles and Kaitlyn Carpenter at No. 3 both found the best of their opponents, earning UMass its second and third points. The Minutewomen retain their winning record at 6-5 while Army improves to 6-7.
The Minutewomen started the morning off winning two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 duo of Maude Lecluyse and Laura Danai have refused to lose a match together, defeating the Army team of Anne Houghton and Kristin Beehler, 9-8(3). Lecluyse and Danai are 7-0 on the season. Candynce Boney and Carpenter earned the second doubles win at No. 3 against Robie Verano and Jurelle Mendoza, 8-3. At No.1 Ploch and Tanisha Hodgson lost to the team of Niki Flach and Michael Tollerton, 8-6.
Army sophomore Anne Houghton continued her impressive singles play by defeating Boney 6-2, 6-3 to gain her 18th win of the season, while only dropping one. At No. 2 singles, Ploch cruised through her opponent with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Carpenter fought hard for her singles win at No. 3 pulling out a close 7-6(1), 7-5 win. Army closed out the match with wins at Nos. 4 through 6.
The Minutewomen return to action on Tuesday March 3 when they travel to Providence to take on Brown, which has the top winning percentage in the Ivy League.
