WEST POINT, N.Y. - After a tough week of losses the UMass women's tennis team swept in doubles and dropped one lone singles match to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday night, 6-1. The Minutewomen improve to 5-4 on the season.
UMass was led in doubles by Tanisha Hodgson and Magdalena Ploch who made quick work of their opponents, 8-4. In the number two spot Candynce Boney and Kaitlyn Carpenter swept past DeCarlos and Koshunova, 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, not wasting any time, Laura Danai and Maude Lecluyse won 8-0. Having clenched the doubles point the Minutewomen had the momentum moving into singles action.
Boney fought hard at No. 2 singles to pull out her eighth singles win of the season. The match came down to a super-tiebreak, with Boney winning 6-2, 2-6, 10-5. Carpenter represented UMass at No. 3 with a win against junior Ksenia Chernyshova, 6-1, 6-4. Hodgson breezed through at No. 4 as did Lecluyse at No. 5, both winning 6-2, 6-1. Earning UMass its sixth point at No. 6 singles was senior Danai 6-0, 6-1. The Minutewomen's only loss came at the No. 1 singles position where Ploch was defeated by Julia Koshunova in a three set match, 6-2, 7-5, 10-4.
