Minutewomen Improve Times At Valentine Invitational

Boston, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team competed at the Boston University Valentine Invitational Friday to no team score. The Minutewomen are gearing up for the Atlantic 10 Championships next weekend, and posted many season-bests at BU. The best performance of the day came from sophomore Ida Okkonen (Kuopio, Finland) who came in third in the long jump with a mark of 18-01.75. Junior Brittany Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) earned a team-best time of 1:16.74 in the 500 meter run. She ranked seventh of 60 runners.
Another season-best time came from junior Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) in the 200 meter. Heinricher ranked 15th with a time of 25.28. Junior Ros Murphy (Beverly, Mass.) broke the one-minute mark in the 400 meter run with a season-best time of 59.73. Rookie Deanna Julian (Dudley, Mass.) also raced the 400 meter to a personal-best 59.95. Sophomore Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.) ran the 800 meter in 2:17. 80 for a 31st place finish of 162 runners and a season-best mark.
In the field events, redshirt senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) ranked sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75. Junior Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) ranked fourth in the shot put with a distance of 44-04.00, yet fouled in the weight throw. Sophomore Stephanie Aguguo finished 12th in the triple jump with a mark of 35-10.25.
The Mintuewomen start the championship season next weekend at the University of Rhode Island for the Atlantic 10 Championships.
