AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior Armando Cuko (Beverly, Mass.) was named the American Football Coaches Association FCS All-American placekicker for 2009. Cuko is the 18th UMass player to be named to the AFCA All-American team, which is just one team. Cuko was third in the NCAA in field goals made per game this season with 2.0, making a school-record 19 in a single-season.
Cuko was named the CAA Third-Team kicker this season after a record-setting career at UMass. He finished as the all-time UMass career made field goals leader (31) and as the all-time UMass single-season made field goals leader (19) in 2009. The record previously was 16, held by both Chris Koepplin and Sandro Vitiello. He finished eighth in career scoring in UMass history with 196 and second in career made PATs with 103, passed Chris Koepplin with 99 in final college game. He made 11 career field goals of more than 40 yards (seven in senior year) including a career-long of 51, tied for third-longest at UMass.
His 2.0 field goals per game led the NCAA most of the season, but finished third in the nation, first in the CAA. He also finished 11th in the NCAA in points per game (8.8), ranked first in CAA. Cuko made three field goals in five games this year and multiple field goals in first three games he played this season.
UMass' 18 selection is tied for the third-most of any program since the team started in 1979. Eastern Kentucky has had 21 players earn 23 honors; Appalachian State 16 players for 20 honors. UMass' 18 selections of 17 players is tied with Montana and Delaware.
