AMHERST, Mass. - Senior kicker Armando Cuko of the football team was named UMass Athlete of the Week on Monday for his exploits in UMass' 37-7 victory over Northeastern on Saturday at McGuirk Stadium. The Beverly, Mass. native made three field goals, setting a new school record for field goals in a season, and finished the game with 13 points scored.
Cuko and head coach Kevin Morris will be recognized at Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon. This week's luncheon will be held in Room 1009 of the Campus Center beginning at 12:15 p.m. Hockey head coach Toot Cahoon is scheduled to speak as well.
On Saturday, Cuko opened the game's scoring by hitting a 30-yard field goal at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. After three successful extra point kicks after touchdowns, Cuko split the uprights with a 36-yard kick just before halftime. After another extra point in the third quarter, he closed the game's scoring with his third field goal, a 35-yard effort with 8:34 left in the game.
Cuko now has 18 field goals on the season, setting a new UMass record. He passed Chris Koepplin (2006) and Sandro Vitiello (1978), who held the record with 16. Cuko is now also tied for the career made field goals mark in UMass history with 30. He is tied with Silvio Bonvini (1985-88).
