   Friday, Oct. 30

If you are checking in on JTAM, here's an early advance notice that UMass hoop coach Derek Kellogg will be on WHYN 560 AM at 7:05 a.m. and WRNX 100.9 FM at 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning to talk about "SUPER SUNDAY." Listen in and follow Coach Kellogg on his Twitter page. Also, the video scoreboard at McGuirk Stadium is operational. Friday brings three games on campus with men's soccer vs. Duquesne at 12 p.m., women's soccer vs. George Washington at 2:30 p.m., and No. 19 field hockey vs. La Salle at 3 p.m. Also the hockey team starts a home-and-home at Providence at 7 p.m.

  • After three straight weekends of playing just one game to open the season, the UMass hockey team will get into a regular routine with a home-and-home series tonight and Saturday against Providence. The teams will play in Rhode Island at Schneider Arena at 7 tonight in the first road game of the season for the Minutemen (3-0, 2-0 Hockey East). They play at the Mullins Center at the same time on Saturday. The Springfield Republican, Daily Hampshire Gazette and Daily Collegian have previews.

  • With goalie Paul Dainton leading UMass to a perfect 3-0 record and Providence's Alex Beaudry holding the top goals-against average and save percentage in the Hockey East, the two will be the difference makers in the two schools two weekend matchups. The Daily Collegian has the story.

  • The football team leaves for Maine in the late morning on Friday. The Daily Hampshire Gazette has a story on Kyle Havens, who is receiving support from his teammates after a rough game at Richmond last week.

  • The Boston Globe mentions the UMass at Maine football game with this: True sophomore linebacker Tyler Holmes (17 tackles vs. No. 1 Richmond) is an emerging star for the Minutemen.

  • The Massachusetts men's basketball team won't host a Midnight Madness this year because UMass coach Derek Kellogg doesn't feel his team is ready for the showcasing. Instead, the Minutemen will hold an open practice as part of Super Sunday on Nov. 1. Check out the Daily Collegian preview.

  • Cristina Adams is entirely candid when she admits that she won't mind hanging up her cleats at the conclusion of the University of Massachusetts women's soccer season. After making a strong commitment to the sport for as long as she can remember, Adams is looking forward to exploring other challenges. The Patriot-Ledger has a feature on Adams.

  • In order to reach the Atlantic 10 Tournament, the Massachusetts women's soccer team will need to win its last two games this season. Though the Minutewomen would need a host of scenarios to play out, they can greatly improve their chances of making postseason play by defeating both George Washington and Richmond this weekend. The Daily Collegian has a full preview.

  • The women's soccer team will look to goalkeeper Lauren Luckey according to the Daily Collegian.

  • The UMass cross country team will encounter sloppy conditions this weekend when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships in St. Louis. The field is expected to be thick, wet, and muddy as rain showers will accumulate anywhere from two to four inches by Friday night. Daily Collegian has an outlook.

  • The Massachusetts swimming and diving teams will host its first of two straight home meets this Saturday against Stony Brook. The men will look to rebound from a loss to Army with a few changes in the events. The Daily Collegian previews the event.

  • Don't Miss This: Three games on campus on Friday starting with men's soccer vs. Duquesne at 12 p.m. The women's soccer team hosts George Washington at 2:30 p.m., at Rudd Field and the No. 19 field hockey team plays a critical match with La Salle at 3 p.m. at Garber Field.

       Thursday, Oct. 29

    Thursday means its the Bud Light UMass Radio Show at the Hangar Pub & Grille tonight at 7 p.m. Seniors Chris Zardas and Anthony Monette will be the players guests joining coach Kevin Morris and Josh Maurer. Lots of action from basketball as Derek Kellogg has activated his Twitter page. JTAM also has stories on the football team prepping for huge game at Maine.

  • In the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Matt Vautour has a story on UMass' hard-working freshman basketball players. The Minutemen have a closed scrimmage on Saturday against Boston University a day prior to "Super Sunday" at the Mullins Center.

  • The Providence Journal has an interesting look at the A-10 conference schedules and their degrees of difficulty. UMass has the ninth toughest based on this system. George Washington faces the toughest schedule in Atlantic 10 play this season, and Richmond the easiest.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preseason basketball notebook that touches on the Minutemen's preseason honors.

  • Since no other NBA team snatched up Tony Gaffney after the Lakers waived him last week, the former UMass forward will play for Hapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon, a team in Israel's top pro league. Gaffney, an undrafted free agent, was the final player cut by the Lakers. This is covered in Press Enterprise and the L.A. Times.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of UMass football, as the No. 19 Minutemen head to Maine to face the Black Bears on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

  • UMass football coach Kevin Morris is quoted in the Richmond Times-Disptach in talking about the Richmond Spiders having an improved team over last year's National Championship squad.

  • In its final non-conference field hockey game of the year, the Minutewomen fell to Dartmouth 6-3 Wednesday night. UMass will have to win out its remaining conference schedule, as well as a combination of other things in order to make the A-10 tournament. The Daily Collegian has complete coverage.

  • The Daily Collegian has a sidebar on juniors Makaela Potts and Jaime Bourazeris were both injured in the loss.

  • Without senior captain Mark DeSantis, the Minutemen have not been able to capitalize offensively. Their leading scorer will return this weekend, when the UMass soccer team takes on Duquesne Friday and St. Bonaventure Sunday, hoping to rebound after a 1-0 loss at the hands of Rhode Island last Saturday.   • Before this year, UMass soccer coach Sam Koch had no idea who Mark Dangleis was. Now the midfielder transfer for the Minutemen has become a key part to UMass' success, and will look to help the team get back to the Atlantic 10 tournament this season.   • One of the top pitching prospects in the world, Aroldis Chapman, the 21-year-old Cuban lefthander with a fastball that hits triple digits, was at Fenway Park yesterday and came away impressed with the Red Sox. His agent if UMass grad and former Minuteman baseball player Edwin Mejia. The Boston Globe has a story on the gathering.

       Wednesday, Oct. 28

    Field hockey takes center stage today as the Minutewomen host Dartmouth tonight at 6 p.m., at Garber Field in the squad's final non-conference game of the season. Earlier in the day head coach Justine Sowry will be a guest speaker at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Football coach Kevin Morris will also speak and swimmer Elizabeth Walsh will be honored as the Athlete of the Week.

  • In his Hitting To All Fields column in the Springfield Republican, Garry Brown leads off with the UMass football team writing: Just sitting and wondering if the Minutemen can bounce back.

  • The field hockey team's game against Dartmouth is previewed in the Daily Collegian. The paper also has a story on UMass' need for Strong defense.

  • UMass legend Marcus Camby opened his 2009-10 NBA season with the Los Anegles Clippers in a 99-92 loss to the defending NBA Champion L.A Lakers. Camby played 21 minutes and had 14 points and six rebounds.

  • ABC40 reports that UMass' Tony Gaffney will head to Israel to play for Hapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon after being the Lakers' final cut in preseason.

  • The Cornell Daily Sun has a preview of UMass' first home basketball opponent Cornell. The Big Red feature former Minuteman Max Groebe. UMass and Cornell (which won the Ivy League in 2009) play at the Mullins Center on Nov. 18.

    Greg Mauldin is hoping to get back to the NHL with the New York Islanders.
  • The New England Hockey Journal has a feature story on the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers withe comments from former UMass star Greg Mauldin.

  • In other minor league hockey news involving former Minutemen, John Wessbecker has been signed by the Trenton Devils of the ECHL. Wessbecker participated in training camps with the Houston Aeros of the AHL and the Florida Everblades of the ECHL. The defenseman from Victoria, Minnesota was selected by the Tampa Bay Lighting in the seventh round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

  • The Daily Collegian has an Atlantic 10 men's soccer notebook.

  • Coming in ranked No. 17, Magdalena Ploch advanced to the fifth round of the ITA Regional Championships over this past weekend, upsetting the No. 3 seed. UMass doubles team of Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse lost after a first-round bye. The Daily Collegian has coverage.

  • The Minutewomen, under coach Jim Dietz, had another strong showing as they took home the top four places in the singles races, first place in the Lightweight 4 and third place in the Varsity 8 races at the Head of Fish Regatta. The Daily Collegian has a story.

       Tuesday, Oct. 27

    On Monday the national polls were released for football and hockey and UMass is in the Top 25 in both. The hockey team, which stands 3-0, breaks into the poll at No. 17. The football team stands at 19th in the media poll and 23rd in the FCS Coaches poll. JTAM has stories on both teams as well news on swimming and field hockey.

  • In the hockey polls, UMass is listed 17th in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Division I Men's Poll with 179 points. The Minutemen are are highest new entry on the list. Fellow Hockey East teams are: No. 4 Boston University, No. 9 UMass Lowell, No. 10 Vermont, No. 13 Boston College. Other opponents include No. 7 Yale and No. 18 Quinnpiac. UMass is second among "Others Receiving Votes" in the USA Today poll with 40 points.

  • Inside College Hockey lists UMass at No. 16 as a rising team with the following comment: Nice weekend for the UMass hockey program--the Minutemen improve to 3-0 by beating Maine in Amherst, and ex-goalie Jon Quick, now with the L.A. Kings, signs a three-year contract extention worth a reported $5.4 million.

  • Former UMass All-American Jon Quick is mentioned and pictured in the 1-.html">Hockey News power rankings story as the Los Angeles Kings are up to No. 9 in the league.

  • In the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Matt Vautour writes about the UMass quarterback situation saying Kyle Havens will continue to start. "There's no controversy here," UMass coach Kevin Morris said. "Havens will be the starter."

  • Check out the Sports Network poll where UMass is ranked 19th by the football media. In the FCS Coaches Poll, UMass drops from 16th to 23rd after losing to the top team in the nation, Richmond.

       Monday, Oct. 26

    The UMass hockey team kicked off the weekend with a solid 5-3 win over Maine to move 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04. The football team suffered a tough loss at #1 Richmond down in Virginia on Saturday. JTAM has news on UMass' Jon Quick signing a big new three-year contract with the L.A. Kings and Tony Gaffney being the L.A. Lakers final cut before the start of the NBA regular season.

  • Coverage of the UMass hockey win over Maine comes from the: Daily Hampshire Gazette, the Springfield Republican, Daily Collegian, the Bangor Daily News and the Maine Campus.

  • The Metro has a piece on how the Hockey East standings are not stacked with the traditional powers at the top to date. UMass is on top of the heap with a 2-0 HEA mark.

  • UMass All-American Jon Quick signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings for $1.8 million per year. Check out the stories from the L.A. Times, L.A. Examiner and TSN.

  • In Quick's first game after signing the extension, he picked up a 5-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes, making 30 saves. On Sunday, Quick was in action against the Columbus Blue Jackets and he picked up the 6-2 win with 25 saves. The L.A. Times has a recap. Quick is 7-3 this season.

  • Former Minuteman hockey star P.J. Fenton is starring in pro hockey in Germany. Garry Brown of the Springfield Republican has a feature story on the son of former NHL player Paul Fenton.

  • Looking ahead to next week's football game at Maine on Halloween afternoon, the Black Bears had a bye week. The Bangor Daily News had an extensive story on the CAA and the league's current state and future with the expansion additions of Old Dominion and Georgia State.

  • All three of UMass' NFL players did not play this weekend. Jeremy Cain and his Jacksonville Jaguars along with Matt Lawrence and his Baltimore Ravens both had bye weeks. James Ihedigbo was deactivated by the New York Jets and did not play in their game at Oakland.

  • Speaking of UMass' NFL players, former Miami Dolphin Brandon London was at the UMass-Richmond football game on Saturday to watch his alma mater take on his dad's team. London was a guest at halftime on the UMass Sports Network and his still seeking to get back to the NFL while he is modeling on the side.

    Tony Gaffney is hoping to hook on with another NBA team.

  • Tony Gaffney was waived by the Lakers on Saturday, check out stories in the L.A. Times, Lakers.com and the Fall River Herald in Massachusetts.

  • Field hockey got back on track with a 10-1 smashing of Saint Louis out in Missouri on Sunday. The Daily Collegian as a compete recap.

  • Men's soccer suffered another tough 1-0 loss, this time to Rhode Island on Saturday. Check out coverage in the Daily Collegian.

  • The women's soccer 2-1 loss at Xavier on Friday is covered in the Daily Hampshire Gazette. The team's two losses in Ohio are chronicled in the Daily Collegian.

  • College Swimming.com has a recap of UMass' swim meets at Army this weekend.

  • In baseball news, the NECBL where many UMass players see action in summer league, is relocating the Manchester, Conn., team to Laconia, N.H. The Laconia ownership group is headed by Jonathon and Noah Crane of Hanover. Noah Crane was a basketball and baseball star at Woodstock (Vt.) High during the mid-1990s and later pitched at UMass.
