#10 Field Hockey Falls At #7 UConn, 3-0

STORRS, Conn. - After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, #7 UConn (12-1) scored three goals in the second half to defeate the #10 UMass field hockey team (9-4), 3-0, on Friday night at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex. Alesha Widdall made nine saves in goal for the Minutewomen. Loren Sherer led the Huskies with one goal and one assist.
The Huskies held a sizeable lead in shots, 30-2, and drew 15 penalty corners while the Minutewomen had none.
Widdall made five saves in the first half while she and her defense fought off five Huskies penalty corners, but after halftime UConn was able to take over.
Jestine Angelini started the scoring 2:56 into the second half off a penalty corner.
Cara Sliverman scored the second UConn goal in the 51st minute on a tip in of a Sherer shot off a corner.
The Huskies' third goal came in the 60th minute when Sherer netted her 20th goal of the season off a Melissa Gonzalez assist.
Nicole Cordero and Cher King registered shots for the Minutewomen.
The Minutewomen return to action next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia to begin Atlantic 10 play. On Friday, UMass plays Saint Joseph's at Drexel and then on Sunday the Minutewomen take on Temple at Geasey Field.
