It's Friday and that means Hockey Night in Western Mass as the Mass Attack takes on Maine tonight in the Mullins Center. Don't forget, tonight is country western night at the Mullins Center so bring out the boots, cowboy hats, and please, more cow bell! Football leaves campus today for tomorrow's huge game against No. 1 and defending NCAA champ Richmond. Football isn't the only team taking on Richmond. The No. 16 field hockey team hosts the Spiders at Garber Field today at 3 p.m. JTAM has stories on these games and more.

  • Tonight's hockey game against Maine is previewed by The Republican, the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the Daily Collegian, the Bangor Daily News, the Maine Campus, and on WWLP TV

  • The Daily Hampshire Gazette also has a preview for tomorrow's football game at Richmond. Don't forget, all the info you need on the game can be found at the UMass Game Day Central. The Live, Interactive Blog will also be up and running two hours prior to kick-off to give you the behind-the-scenes info and to answer your questions.

  • UMass was picked 9th in the A-10 Preseason Poll with Ricky Harris being named to the preseason first team and Freddie Riley and Terrell Vinson earning nods to the All-Rookie Team.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of the women's soccer team's trip to Ohio this weekend to face Xavier and Dayton. The Collegian also has a sidebar on Christina Adams sparking the team's offense.

  • The Daily Collegian also has a preview of the swim team's meet against Army and the crew team's trip to the Head of the Fish Regatta.

  • Jon Quick and the L.A. Kings picked up a 5-4 OT win over Dallas last night. A complete recap with video highlights can be found on the Kings Website. Quick is 6-3 on the season after the win.

  • Several UMass Hockey alums will be in action tonight as well. Cory Quirk and the Worcester Sharks will take on Providence, Mike Kostka and the Portland Pirates head to Norfolk, Greg Mauldin and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers head to Manchester, Mark Matheson and the Milwaukee Admirals head to Rockford, while Matt Anderson and the Chicago Wolves host Manitoba.   • Tony Gaffney played 3 minutes with three points and a rebound as the Lakers defeated the Denver Nuggets.

       Thursday, Oct. 22

    Two of the biggest surprises of the football season will be the guests on Thursday's Bud Light UMass Football Show at the Hangar Pub & Grille Come out to hear from linebacker Eric Dickson and offensive lineman Jared Chivers along with Coach Kevin Morris. Also the scoreboard at McGuirk Stadium has been installed. Chat with Matt Irwin today at 11 a.m.

  • NBC22 has a video preview of the UMass football game at Richmond and the hockey game vs. Maine on Friday night at the Mullins Center.

  • The Daily Hampshire Gazette's Matt Vautour has a football story on UMass' senior kicker Armando Cuko, who is on his way to a record-setting season. He leads in the NCAA in field goals per game (2.8) and scoring per game (12.0).

  • In the Springfield Republican, Ron Chimelis has a lengthy feature story on UMass' two-headed tailback tandem of Tony Nelson and Jonathan Hernandez. Each has gained 100 yards in two games this season.

  • The Daily Collegian has a preview of UMass' football game at defending national champion Richmond.

  • The Daily Collegian takes a look at UMass' offensive line. Through the Minutemen's first six games, the team has started four different combinations on the offensive line. Even with senior tailback Tony Nelson missing time, players on the O-line have been able to fill in for injured starters and make an impact.

  • In Ohio, the Lakewood Observer has a feature story on native Brandon Collier, who has been a four-year starter for the Minutemen.

  • A great sign for UMass' Tony Gaffney is that the Los Angeles Lakers have waived the only other free agent rookie in training camp Thomas Kelati. L.A. has 14 players left in training camp. Also, although it might be hurt his physically, Gaffney suffered a lower back contusion during the game against the Warriors on Tuesday night, it might be a positive. That may give the Lakers the option to put him on injured reserve to start the season, allowing him to part of the NBA roster with an NBA salary. "I do think he has a future in the NBA. Maybe not with our team, but definitely in the NBA," Lakers' coach Phil Jackson said. The Lakers could decided to keep Gaffney, who is averaging 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in six preseason games, and send him to the D-Fenders of the D-League.

  • On MassLive.com, Ron Chimelis has a story on Tony Gaffney. He mentions that fans might be able to see Gaffney on Thursday night as the Lakers play the Denver Nuggets on TNT at 10 p.m. Gaffney is questionable with the back injury be suffered in the Lakers' last game.

  • The Daily Collegian previews the men's soccer game against Rhode Island this Saturday. The last meeting between the two teams ended in a 3-1 victory for the Rams, who have won their past two Atlantic 10 games.

  • Without Mark DeSantis, the UMass soccer team has had to improvise on the offensive side of the ball. By rotating players in the backfield, Minutemen coach Sam Koch has put together a balanced attack that is effective on both ends. The Daily Collegian looks at the defense.

  • Coming off two tough A-10 losses, the No. 16 UMass field hockey team hosts Richmond on Friday at 3 p.m., in a stiff conference test. The Daily Collegian has a full preview.

  • After three straight losses, including two to A-10 opponents, the UMass field hockey team will look to take it one play at a time for the rest of the season. While relying on strong defensive play, the Minutewomen hope to generate more offense when they take on Richmond this Friday. The Daily Collegian looks at the Minutewomen.

       Wednesday, Oct. 21

    Wednesday means its UMass Sports Luncheon time. Please join us at 12:15 p.m. at the Mullins Center's Massachusetts Room on the third floor as men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg will speak to fans and take questions in previewing the 2009-10 season. Football coach Kevin Morris will also speak. Tailback Jonathan Hernandez and goalie Paul Dainton will be honored as the Co-Athletes of the Week.

  • The new McGuirk Stadium scoreboard is being constructed. Check out photo updates on UMass' twitter page. The lower portion has been installed and the remainder could be completed by Wednesday.

  • In the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Matt Vautour takes a look at a pair of redshirt freshmen who made an impact in Saturday's win over UNH: Darren Thellen and Stephane Milhim.

  • The Daily Collegian has a look at Richmond football as the Spiders proved why its the No. 1 team in the FCS with a win on the road against Maine.

  • One final look at the UMass-UNH football game from last Saturday comes from the New Hampshire, UNH's student newspaper.

  • In the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Matt Vautour has a UMass basketball notebook focusing on a slimmer Hashim "Big City" Bailey.

  • A pair of former All-American UMass basketball bigmen were on the court against each other on Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Clippers defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv, 108-96, in the Israeli super power's second and final exhibition game against an NBA team. Stephane Lasme plays for Maccabi and saw action for 10 minutes and scored nine points. Marcus Camby did not play for the Clips.

  • The L.A. Lakers and Tony Gaffney moved to 4-1 on the preseason with a 113-107 win over the Golden State Warriors. Gaffney played five minutes and had two points and a rebound.

  • The Los Angeles Times has a follow-up to the wonderful Boston Globe story on Tony Gaffney. The Times Blog states: Phil Jackson goes on to say that Gaffney's inclusion on the final roster will definitely be a front office talking point, but I still think it remains a long shot. No doubt, they like what's been on display thus far, and Gaffney does seem light years ahead in the pecking order than fellow roster hopeful Thomas Kelati. At the very least, I think his chances have risen from "doubtful" to "not out of the question." But between today's lean economic times and the Lakers' already sky high payroll, I'm guessing the desire to keep the roster at a baker's dozen will win out. I wouldn't be surprised, however, to see Gaffney in a D-Fenders jersey to start the season.

  • College Hockey News has a preview of Hockey East with capsules on all 10 teams.

  • Boston University, which opened the 2009-10 season with a 3-2 loss at UMass last Friday, suffered a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame on Tuesday night. The Boston Globe has coverage.

       Tuesday, Oct. 20

    The old scoreboard at McGuirk Stadium is finally coming down. On Monday night the entire board had been removed in the start of the installation of the new videoboard was underway.   • The scoreboard at McGuirk Stadium is coming down and the new one has arrived. Check out pictures on UMass' Twitter Page for more updates all well.

  • The UMass football team, coming off the 23-17 win over previously-ranked No. 4 New Hampshire, is up to No. 14 in the Sports Network media poll. Richmond remains No. 1 as the Minutemen will play the top-ranked team in the nation for the fourth time in history on Saturday. In the FCS Coaches Poll, UMass moved from No. 20 to No. 16.

  • In the Springfield Republican, Ron Chimelis has a look at the football team prepping for Richmond after knocking off No. 4 UNH last weekend.

  • Playing most of the New Hampshire game without its top two award candidates in tailback Tony Nelson and safety Jeromy Miles, Kevin Morris said both players are expected to return for Saturday's gam at Richmond. "Yes, I think both guys are going to be all set," coach Kevin Morris said. Coverage in the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

  • In his Around FCS Column David Coulson has a good chunk on the UMass win over UNH.

  • The Daily Collegian has a look at Richmond, which ran its way past Maine last Saturday, 38-21, in Orono.

  • The Richmond Times Dispatch has a look at the Spiders' video coordinator, who is prepping the defending national champs to face UMass this Saturday.

  • The Boston Globe has a really nice feature on Tony Gaffney as he tries to make the L.A. Lakers roster. "We really like his basketball feel,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said yesterday, "his athleticism, his defensive capabilities. He's learning how to shoot the ball, and that's one of the keys for him. He's doing really well out there. Guys like him. He fits in really well with us. I am not going to make any presumptions about that. We are going to sit down and talk about that in the next couple of days. He definitely puts a twinkle in our eye, no doubt about it.''

  • Facing Boston University, the UMass men's swimming and diving teams pulled out a 153-147 victory this weekend. Senior Juan Moliere anchored the Minutemen relay squad that also included juniors Chris Howard and Trevor Ziegler and freshman Pete Sacco. The Daily Collegian recaps the win.

  • The Daily Collegian reviews the cross country weekend. The UMass women's cross country team outran its male counterparts in competition this weekend. At the Albany Invitational this past weekend. The Minutewomen placed 4th overall while the Minutemen finished 25th out of 35 at the ISU Pre-Nationals.

  • The weather may not have been the most welcoming but the UMass rowing team gained plenty of experience this past weekend in their most acclaimed race of the year, the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. Rather than facing the wind as their usual obstacle, the Minutewomen rowed through a mixture of rain and snow on Saturday and Sunday. The Daily Collegian has complete coverage.

       Monday, Oct. 19

    We are coming off one of the best weekends in UMass athletics in recent memory with the hockey team knocking off defending national champion No. 2 Boston University 3-2 on Friday night and the football team handing No. 4 New Hampshire its first loss of the season on Saturday, winning 23-17. JTAM has plenty of stories on the Minutemen's successful teams. JTAM also has a look at some alums in the pro ranks including Stephane Lasme, who played against the New York Knicks on Sunday.

  • In NFL action on Sunday, UMass' alums were in action. In the Jacksonville Jaguars' 23-20 overtime win over the St. Louis Rams (coached by one-time UMass assistant coach Steve Spagnuolo), Jeremy Cain snapped nine times on punts and kicks for the Jags.

  • In the game of the day in the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings held off the Baltimore Ravens, 33-31 at the Metrodome. Former UMass star tailback Matt Lawrencemade three tackles on special teams against the 6-0 Vikings. For the year, Lawrence has six tackles all on special teams.

  • All-time UMass basketball great Stephane Lasme was back in the United States with Maccabi Tel Aviv, as the Euroleague power lost 106-91 to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in an exhibition game. Lasme had five points, four rebounds and a block in 15 minutes. Maccabi Tel Aviv heads to the West Coast to take on the Los Angeles Clippers with Marcus Camby on Oct. 20.

  • Tony Gaffney continues to earn his way towards to a spot with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2009-10 season. When the Lakers played at the Staples Center on Saturday, Gaffney was surprised when he walked in his home lockerroom. Gaffney, who wears No. 23, was positioned next to No. 24 Kobe Bryant. According to the Press Enterprise: "It was surreal," the undrafted rookie free agent said. "I'm the only person in the world who has a locker next to Kobe." Gaffney, a native of Massachusetts, admits he was a lifelong Boston Celtics fan before the Lakers picked him up this summer. "I'm a Lakers fan for life," he said.

  • In the game on Saturday, Gaffney played 11 minutes and scored six points and grabbed three rebounds in the Lakers' 91-87 win over the Charlotte Bobcats. On Sunday, the Lakers beat the L.A. Clippers, 114-105 at Staples Center. Gaffney had five points in six minutes. Marcus Camby didn't play for the Clippers as he is still nursing some injuries.

  • The D-League's Springfield Amour held local tryouts over the weekend. The Springfield Republican has a story touching on UMass grad Dante Milligan who is trying to earn a spot with the new D-League squad.

  • College Swimming.com has the press release on UMass being picked to win the Atlantic 10 in men's swimming. The Minutemen captured their 11th crown in program annals last year.

  • The Daily Collegian covers UMass field hockey and the Minutewomen's stunning two losses. A season after sweeping Atlantic 10 Conference play, UMass lost its first two conference matchups this season against Temple and Saint Joseph's.

  • After dropping Friday's game against Temple, UMass men's soccer rebounded with a two goals on Sunday to defeat Saint Joseph's 2-0 for a much needed win. The Daily Collegian has coverage as Stuart Amick and Andrew Henshaw provided the scores while goalkeeper Shane Curran-Hays recorded his second shut-out in the last five games.

  • The women's soccer team increases its chances of making the A-10 Tournament with a 3-2 win over URI on Saturday. The Daily Collegian covers the game as Therese Smith scored with under three minutes remaining to give UMass the go-ahead goal in the win.

  • Former UMass soccer player Richard Frongillo has been named to the New England Soccer Hall of Fame. The MetroWest Daily News has a story on the 1989 UMass alum.

  • Former UMass pitcher Chad Paronto was outrighted to the minor leagues by the Houston Astros. The move was mentioned on MASN.com.
