CINCINNATI, Ohio - UMass battled back from a 1-0 deficit, but it was Xavier that came out on top in overtime by a 2-1 margin in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action on Friday evening. With the loss, the Minutewomen fall to 4-9-2 overall and 3-5-0 in the A-10, while the Musketeers move to 3-13-1 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play.
Xavier opened the scoring in the 55th minute as Brittany Green connected with a feed from Kelsey Phillips and Susie Pauley.
Then at 77:50, UMass came up with the equalizer as junior Therese Smith recorded an unassisted tally from five yards out. The goal was Smith's team-leading fifth of the season and extended her streak to four straight games with at least one point. Seven of Smith's 12 points on the year have come in the past three games.
Just 38 seconds into overtime, however, the Musketeers stole the victory with Green's second of the game. Her strike from 30 yards out tipped off goalkeeper Emily Cota's fingers and into the net.
Redshirt junior Sydney Stoll finished with a team-high five shots followed by Smith's four as UMass out-shot Xavier 13-11. The Minutewomen also held the edge in corner kicks, 6-1. Cota totaled five saves for UMass, while Kelly Farrell recorded four stops for the Musketeers. Fouls were 10-2 against Xavier.
The Minutewomen will play their final road game of the regular season this Sunday, Oct. 25, when the squad will be in action at Dayton at 1 p.m.
