Shiyi Zan Earns UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete Of The Week

AMHERST, Mass. - Redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) was named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week Monday after excelling at the Great Dane Classic over the weekend. Zan won the gold in the 5000 meter with a time of 17:50.86. She also set the a meet record with that time. Zan finished a full 26 seconds before the second place finisher--Audra Brown from Toledo.
This weekend, the Minutewomen ranked fifth overall of 30 teams at the Great Dane Classic. The squad returns to action Friday at the Reebok Games held in Roxbury, Mass. at the Reggie Lewis Track.
This is the second time this season Zan has earned Athlete of the Week. The first came during the cross country season after she finished first at home versus Vermont, Maine, and Colgate. Zan was also named women's cross country Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year.
Zan will be honored this Wednesday, Jan. 28 at the UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in the Amherst Room at 1009 Campus Center starting at Noon. Guest speakers include hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon and women's basketball coach Marnie Dacko. The Sports Luncheon runs from Noon to 1:00 p.m. with a salad-to-dessert buffet for just $10.00.
