    The weekend is here! Hope everyone is staying warm. Action heats up at the Mullins Center tonight at 7 p.m. when hockey hosts Providence College. Then the men's basketball team welcomes in Temple on Saturday for a crucial A-10 game on ESPN2. Saturday is 1970s night. A number of players from the 70's are expected to attend, so don't miss it!

  • Just another reminder of who is expected to attend Saturday's 1970's celebration: Jim Burke, Bob Dempsey, David Dibble, Mark Donoghue, Fan Gaudette (assistant coach) Michael Littman (manager), Tom McLaughlin, John Moynihan, Charles Olsen, Bob Powers (manager) Sam Provo, Mike Pyatt, Peter Trow, and Rick Vogeley. The family of the late John Murphy will also be recognized.

  • The Riverfront Times has an interesting read on Saint Louis men's basketball after its win over the Minutemen on Wednesday. The piece is titled SLU Beats UMass, Realizes It Has Experienced Players.

  • Andy Katz, who was at the Dayton/UMass game, references the Minutemen's victory in his blog. He writes: "Dayton hasn't been the same team since halftime of the UMass game Saturday in Springfield."

  • Checking out-of-town A-10 men's basketball scores, Xavier topped URI, 67-65, in an exciting game on Thursday evening. The conference season has continued to be unpredictable with 15th ranked Xavier nearly falling while Dayton was given a scare by Fordham on Wednesday night.

  • Former UMass softball player Allyson Rioux will be inducted into the American Softball Association Hall of Fame. This story from the Stamford Advocate includes an old quote from 2002 from current Minutewomen softball coach Elaine Sortino.

  • UMass lacrosse alums Sean Morris and Jack Reid are set for their home opener at the TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday. Their Boston Blazers (NLL) host the New York Titans at 7 p.m.

    Brrrrrr...Cold weather is in store as the week winds down, but the UMass men's basketball team hopes to heat up the hardwood against Temple in a couple days. Last night, the Minutemen were a victim of hot shooting in a 69-64 loss to Saint Louis. The women dropped a home decision, 67-53 to Charlotte as well. Thursday involves some more basketball as the Bud Light UMass Basketball show is set for 7 p.m. at the Hangar. Hope to see you there! Check out JTAM for recaps of the MBB defeat.

  • Ron Chimelis files this piece on former UMass men's basketball assistant coach and alum Bill Bayno, who recently resigned from his head coaching job at Loyola-Marymount.

  • Gary Forbes' most recent game for Sioux Falls (NBDL) was a big success. On Tuesday, he led his team with 21 points.

  • Matt Vautour has a story in th Daily Hampshire Gazette about how the CAA is chosing to stay as a 14-team conference when newcomers Old Dominion and Georgia State field teams in the coming years.

  • Women's basketball's loss to Charlotte was noted in the Republican's local roundup. The Charlotte Observer and Greensboro News Record also ran a story.

  • The Boston Herald has an MLS Super Draft Story with a mention of Zack Simmons who is hoping to hear his name called. The draft is today at 2 p.m. on ESPN2.

  • Congratulations to the softball team for being selected to win the A-10. Graham Hayes of ESPN picks the Minutewomen as the 17th best team in the country.

  • Tough break for Mass Attack alum P.J. Fenton, who was sent from the AHL's Worcester Sharks to the ECHL this week. He will suit up for the Phoenix RoadRunners.

    Wednesday night is A-10 basketball night. The men play at Saint Louis at 8 p.m. ET while the women host Charlotte at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center. Check out the multimedia page for places to watch and listen to both games. JTAM has stories on the hoop teams as well as an initial list of players from the 1970s Celebration expected to be on hand on Saturday night.

  • On ESPN.com Andy Katz has a lot of infomation on UMass basketball in his blog after attending the Minutemen's Saturday game vs. Dayton in Springfield. Katz cites: Dayton coach Brian Gregory said there is no player in the country who does more as a nonscorer than UMass senior Tony Gaffney.

  • Ron Chimelis of the Springfield Republican has a preview of the UMass men's game focusing on Tony Gaffney and his minor injury.

  • Matt Vautour has his preview of the game at SLU writing about the recent match-ups between the teams.

  • Out in St. Louis, the Post-Dispatch has this preview of the UMass-SLU game.

  • With the MLS Super Draft on the way, Chivas USA is looking at UMass' Zack Simmons, mentioning: Massachusetts' Zack Simmons, the Atlantic 10's Defensive Player of the Year, has the look of a fellow ready to step onto an MLS pitch immediately.

Meanwhile, the men's and women's basketball teams are hard at work preparing for their second conference games on Wednesday. The men play at Saint Louis at 8 p.m. EST while the women host Charlotte at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center. JTAM has a wide variety of news stories, highlighted by an article on the improvement of A-10 men's basketball.

  • Ron Chimelis of the Springfield Republican has a great article on how the Atlantic 10 has grown since Coach Kellogg played. Kellogg only has great things to say about the A-10's growth. "When I played, there were one or two teams in the (nation's) top five or 10. Now, just about every A-10 team out there is doing some good things."

  • Check out Fran Fraschilla's ESPN blog where he bills Tony Gaffney as his fifth favorite rebounder this season.

  • The Springfield News Sun in Ohio also has a story about Dayton's loss to UMass titled No reason for Flyers to panic after UMass loss. Dayton coach Brian Gregory had a lot of praise for the Minutemen.

  • Dayton Daily News has a comparison of Dayton men's basketball vs. Miami (OH) which has references of Saturday's game vs. the Minutemen. The article is titled "UD or Miami - which school of thought will prevail?"

  • Men's soccer goalie Zack Simmons is noted in an MLS Combine article on Goal.com.

  • UMass women's skier Amy Gifford is mentioned in a High School Ski Notebook in the Central Maine Morning Sentinel

  • As you read in yesterday's JTAM, the Boston Blazers of the NLL played their first-ever game over the weekend. Former UMass All-Americans Sean Morris and Jack Reid look to play a key role in the Blazers' season. Another former Minutemen lax star Jeff Zywicki had a monster opening weekend with San Jose, scoring two goals to go with four assists in a 12-10 loss to Calgary on Friday. Then on Saturday, he scored a goal and added three assists in the Stealth's 10-7 loss to Minnesota. He had hand in 10 of San Jose's 17 goals, (59%)!

  • Checking in with the NBDL's Sioux Fall Skyforce, former UMass star Gary Forbes has continued his great play in hopes of a chance at the NBA. On Saturday, he scored 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting while adding seven rebounds in 24:59 of game action. He added 12 points the night before. Forbes was also earned Honorable Mention accolades for his performance in the D-League Showcase that recently concluded.

  • Updating former Mass Attack All-American Jon Quick, who has enjoyed sensational success in the NHL. Hs current stats are: 4-4-0 record, 2.17 GAA, and .922 save percentage.

  • Speaking of former UMass football coaches, Mark Whipple, who is on the staff for the Philadelphia Eagles, was part of yesterday's 23-11 win over the New York Giants. The Eagles will travel to the Arizona Cardinals for next weekend's NFC title game.

  • Coverage of the UMass hockey team's tough 3-2 overtime defeat at New Hampshire on Saturday: WWLP TV, Union Leader of New Hampshire, Concord Monitor, Boston Globe, Citizen of Laconia, Portsmouth News Herald.

  • The women's basketball win at Fordham on Saturday is mentioned in the Springfield Republican.

  • The Boston Blazers of the National Lacrosse League opened action this weekend in a 19-14 loss to the New York Titans. The Blazers feature two former UMass All-Americans Sean Morris and Jack Reid.
