Maurer Named UMass' Manager Of Broadcast Properties

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Jason Yellin has announced the hiring of Josh Maurer (pronounced MOU-er) as the new Manager of Broadcast Properties for the 2008-09 year. Maurer brings a wealth of experience in broadcasting along with a media relations and television/radio production background. Maurer most recently served as the voice of Charleston Southern University and the Charleston RiverDogs, minor league baseball team.
"Josh is a rising star in the broadcasting profession," said Yellin. "He has a wealth of experience calling games at three universities and in minor league baseball. Josh has a versatile background having working in media relations along with broadcasting in each of his stops. He also has tremendous knowledge when it comes to production with television and the Internet. This total package makes him an ideal candidate for our unique position at UMass."
Maurer comes to UMass after calling football and men's basketball at Charleston Southern, where he also hosted the weekly coaches show and worked in the media relations office. Along with calling games at CSU, Maurer has been the voice of the Charleston RiverDogs, the New York Yankees' Class-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, since 2005. He also aided the RiverDogs media relations office in various roles.
Prior to working for CSU, Maurer handled several duties at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland. From 2003-06, he was the play-by-play voice of the Hawks, director of broadcasting and assistant sports information director.
Maurer called games at his alma mater, the University of Maryland in College Park from 2000-03 where he was also the sports director and news director for WMUC Radio. Maurer had the privilege of calling the Terrapins' 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball title game victory and the 2002 Orange Bowl.
He also has various other experiences including working two years for ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" television show. Maurer has also worked in production with the Philadelphia Phillies television network as an assistant producer; with Comcast SportsNet Television as an associate producer for the "Sportsnite" show; handling various broadcast and media relations duties with the Brockton Rox baseball team in Massachusetts of the Can-Am League; calling games for the South Carolina Stingrays hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League and for Westwood One/CBS Sports Radio in the Washington D.C., office.
Maurer replaces Bob Behler, who left UMass after nine years, to become the voice of Boise State athletics in Idaho. Behler is fond of Maurer, who filled in for him on the UMass Sports Network back in 2006.
"I was very impressed with Josh when he filled on for me to call the UMass at Jacksonville State game," said Behler. "He is an announcer that is well prepared and calls a good game. I think UMass fans will enjoy listening to him. He will do a great job carrying on the tradition of quality broadcasts on the UMass Sports Network."
The 27-year-old Maurer, who is a native Wynnewood, Pa., grew up in the Atlantic 10-rich Philadelphia area is thrilled to be coming to UMass.
"I am incredibly honored to be given this opportunity at UMass," said Maurer. "I can remember going to watch UMass play in Philadelphia every year in the regular season and the A-10 Tournament. To have the opportunity to be broadcasting the games of one of the class teams in the A-10 is a dream come true. I can't wait to get started and follow in the footsteps of Bob Behler. I want to continue to satisfy the UMass faithful by keeping up the proud tradition of being the "Voice of the Minutemen."
